Our story

36 years of Riverbend

1989 — Founded by 7 Portland churches
Riverbend Food Bank founded by 7 Portland-area churches as response to growing food insecurity. Initial budget $50k. Operated from St. Mark’s Episcopal basement first 2 years. ~10 partner organizations + 200 volunteers in first year.
1992-1998 — Early growth + first paid staff
First Executive Director hired 1992 (Eleanor Patel, founder, 25-year tenure). Davis Street warehouse acquired 1995. Expanded to 80 partner organizations by 1998. Earliest Charity Navigator rating earned (3 stars).
1999-2008 — Expansion + Feeding America membership
Grew to 200 partners. Joined Feeding America Network 2002. Expanded service area to all 3 counties (Multnomah, Washington, Clackamas). Added school + summer programs. Charity Navigator 4 stars first time (2008).
2009-2018 — Recession era + scaling
Great Recession (2008-2010) drove recipient growth from 35k → 60k unduplicated individuals. Specific scaling required. Eleanor Patel retired 2014; Maria Chen-Anderson became Executive Director. Continued steady growth + 4-star Charity Navigator.
2019-2022 — COVID + adaptation
COVID-era recipient growth (~50% spike during 2020). Specific adaptations: drive-through distributions, mobile pantries, increased food rescue. Federal stimulus support helped + then waned. Many lessons learned.
2023-present — 36 years + steady growth
Current: 18.4M meals, 85k recipients, 850 partners. 36 years strong. Maria Chen-Anderson continues as Executive Director (10 years). Strong leadership + governance + culture continuity.
