Steadwell Financial Counseling

Credit repair

We repair errors. Not history.

If your reports contain items that are inaccurate, unverifiable, or past their legal window, disputing them is your right — and doing it rigorously is our job. If your reports are accurate, we’ll tell you that instead, for free, at the review.

What credit repair can and cannot do

What we can do

  • Dispute items that are inaccurate — late payments that weren’t late, balances and dates that are wrong, accounts that aren’t yours
  • Challenge items the reporter can’t verify with records when the bureau investigates
  • Push to remove items past their legal reporting window — generally seven years for most negatives, ten for Chapter 7 bankruptcy
  • Untangle identity-theft damage using the federal identity-theft report process, with a documented paper trail
  • Send goodwill requests for isolated slips on otherwise clean accounts — they sometimes work, and we say “sometimes” out loud
  • Build you a rebuild plan: utilization, on-time history, secured cards — the unglamorous math that actually moves scores

What we can’t do — and won’t pretend to

  • Remove accurate, verifiable, timely-reported negative items — no honest company can
  • Promise any score increase, of any size, on any timeline
  • Make a real bankruptcy, judgment, or repossession vanish from history
  • Move faster than the law’s 30–45 day investigation windows
  • Get you a “new credit identity” or CPN — that’s fraud, not repair
  • Do anything you couldn’t legally do yourself for free — we’re hired for rigor, not magic

Where errors hide

The six errors we find most often

Roughly one in five credit reports contains an error meaningful enough to matter. Here’s what they usually look like — and what an honest dispute of each involves.

Accounts that aren’t yours

Mixed files (someone with a similar name), identity theft, or plain data entry errors. These are the strongest disputes — and the most satisfying deletions.

Late marks that weren’t late

A payment reported 30-days late that posted on time, or a single slip reported across multiple months. We dispute with statements and bank records attached.

Wrong balances, limits, and dates

A paid-off collection still showing a balance, a credit limit understated (which inflates your utilization), or a re-aged delinquency date that illegally restarts the clock.

Duplicate collections

The same debt sold twice and reported by two collectors, doubling the damage. One debt gets one entry — the duplicate goes.

Items past their legal window

Most negatives must age off after seven years (ten for Chapter 7 bankruptcy). Items that overstay get challenged with the calendar as evidence.

Identity-theft fallout

Fraudulent accounts and their downstream collections, handled through the federal identity-theft report process with fraud alerts or a credit freeze alongside.

Method, not magic

One item, one reason, one paper trail

Dispute mills blast identical form letters at everything on a report and let volume do the talking. Bureaus are allowed to dismiss disputes they consider frivolous — and that’s exactly what template spam earns. We do the slower thing that works.

Each disputed item gets its own letter, its specific legal reason, and your supporting documents. When a bureau “verifies” something we can show is wrong, we escalate with more evidence — and when an item is simply accurate, we stop and say so.

  • Documented, not templated

Bank statements, payoff letters, police and federal identity-theft reports — evidence attached to every dispute that has some.

  • Bureaus and furnishers

Some disputes are stronger with the bureau; some directly with the company that reported the item. We route each one where it bites.

  • No re-dispute treadmill

Re-sending the same dispute on a verified-accurate item isn’t strategy, it’s billing. When the honest work is done, the engagement ends.

Think your report has errors? Let’s find out for free.

Bring nothing but yourself. We’ll pull all three reports at the review, tag every line — inaccurate, unverifiable, outdated, or accurate — and hand you the plan in writing, whether or not you hire us.

Free means free — no card, no contract, no “activation.” Charging before work is done is illegal, and we wouldn’t anyway.
