Practice areas
Federal matters, and only federal matters.
Every lawyer here works in federal court and with federal agencies every week. Choose the situation closest to yours, or ask us to sort it out on a short call.

Federal investigations
An agent called, a letter arrived, or colleagues are being interviewed. The weeks before any charge are when counsel can do the most.
What we do
- Learn your status
- Stop the damage
- Build the record early
- Make the case when it helps
- Prepare for every path

Grand jury subpoenas
A subpoena has a date on it. Whether it asks for documents or your testimony, the response is a legal decision, not a clerical one.
What we do
- Read it with you
- Call the prosecutor
- Collect and review under privilege
- Produce exactly
- Prepare any witness
-
Wire fraud, mail fraud, bank fraud, securities fraud, tax offenses, money laundering and conspiracy. These cases are built from documents, so that is where we start.
What we do
- Own the evidence
- Test intent and loss
- Bring the right motions
- Coordinate the parallel cases
- Decide with the full picture

Healthcare fraud
Billing audits, HHS-OIG and FBI inquiries, kickback and False Claims Act exposure. For physicians and owners, the license is on the line along with the case.
What we do
- Map every track
- Bring in coding experts under privilege
- Review referral arrangements
- Protect staff and patients
- Resolve the right way
-
Device searches, unauthorized-access (CFAA) charges, crypto and online fraud. We read the search warrant and the forensic report the way the examiner wrote them.
What we do
- Read the warrant's limits
- Test the forensic work
- Ask who was at the keyboard
- Get property back
- Fight fair release terms

Federal sentencing
After a plea or a verdict, the sentence is often the most important number in the case. The guidelines are the starting point, not the end of the argument.
What we do
- Check the guideline math
- Prepare the presentence interview
- Build the mitigation record
- Write the sentencing memorandum
- Plan what comes next

Internal investigations
For boards, audit committees and general counsel: an independent look at what happened, done under privilege, with an eye on what the government will ask next.
What we do
- Scope it with the right people
- Preserve and collect
- Interview carefully
- Report plainly
- Fix and decide
How engagements are priced
Starting points, in writing, before any work begins.
Federal matters vary too much for fixed prices, but you should not have to guess. These are typical starting retainers. Your written estimate comes after a strategy meeting, phase by phase.
- Screening call
- No charge
- Up to 20 minutes by phone to check for conflicts and decide whether a full meeting makes sense.
- Strategy meeting
- $750 flat
- Up to 90 minutes with a partner, in person or by video. Credited in full if you retain us.
- Witness or subpoena representation (individual)
- From $10,000
- Reading the subpoena, talking with the prosecutor, preparing you, and attending any testimony.
- Pre-charge investigation
- From $35,000
- Status inquiries, evidence work, witness interviews and any presentation to prosecutors.
- Company subpoena or internal investigation
- Scoped by phase
- A written budget for each phase, approved by the board or general counsel before work begins.
- Charged case through plea
- From $75,000
- Release, discovery, motions, negotiation and sentencing. A separate trial retainer applies if the case is tried.
- Sentencing only
- From $25,000
- For people whose case was resolved by other counsel. Includes objections, mitigation and the hearing.
Hourly rates range from $425 for associates to $850 for founding partners. Forensic accountants, examiners and our investigator are billed at cost, with your approval first.
If you are charged and cannot afford private counsel, the court will appoint a lawyer. We will tell you honestly if that is the better path for you.
One matter, more than one person
A company and its employees do not always share a lawyer.
When an investigation touches a company and the people who work there, their interests can split. We check for conflicts before the first substantive conversation and tell you plainly who we can represent.
When an employee needs separate counsel, we can suggest experienced federal defense lawyers, and the company may be able to pay for that lawyer under a written agreement that keeps the duty of loyalty with the employee.
Confidential consultation
Not sure which of these fits?
Most people are not. Tell us in general terms what happened on a short, confidential call, and we will tell you where it fits in the federal process.
Please do not send case details through any website form or by email. We cover them by phone or in person, under privilege.
Consultation line: 7 days, 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. If a search or an arrest is happening now, call at any hour.
