“Adrian understood my company better after two weeks than my spouse's expert did after two months. Nothing about the case ever reached my staff.”

Example matters No. 02
Four composite examples, including a loss.
Illustrative composites based on the kinds of matters we handle, with no figures and no real clients. Every case turns on its own facts, and past results do not predict future outcomes.
-
Example outcome · Business valuation
SettledTwo valuations, far apart
- The situation
- A spouse's expert valued the family's distribution company at a fraction of what the business had been worth two years earlier.
- What we did
- We hired an independent valuation expert, identified owner expenses that had been treated as business costs, and deposed the other expert on two assumptions.
- How it ended
- The gap between the reports narrowed enough for the case to settle at mediation. Neither side got its opening number.
-
Example outcome · Executive compensation
SettledGrants that had not vested yet
- The situation
- An executive held several years of unvested restricted stock, some granted before the marriage and some after.
- What we did
- We apportioned each grant under the Texas time rule and modelled the tax effect of dividing it as it vests against offsetting it now.
- How it ended
- The spouses agreed to divide future tranches as they vest, with the plan administrator's approval written into the decree.
-
Example outcome · Hidden assets
Partly successfulTransfers to a relative
- The situation
- In the year before filing, money moved from a joint account to an account held by a sibling of our client's spouse.
- What we did
- Subpoenaed bank records and a focused forensic review traced the transfers. We pleaded fraud on the community.
- How it ended
- The court took part of the transferred value into account in the division, though not all of it: some transfers were found to be repayments of a real loan.
-
Example outcome · Prenuptial agreement
Not successfulA challenge that did not succeed
- The situation
- Our client asked us to set aside a premarital agreement, saying she had signed it under pressure shortly before the wedding.
- What we did
- We told her at the start that the odds were against her: she had her own lawyer, and the disclosure schedules were complete. She chose to proceed.
- How it ended
- The court enforced the agreement. We include this matter because candour about weak positions is part of the job.
Example outcomes are composites for illustration only. They are not guarantees, predictions or reports of real cases.
