Data Science & Analytics Bachelor of Science

  • 4 years
  • On campus or hybrid · evening sections in upper years
  • September + January intakes
  • Cohort of ~70 per year

Data science degrees fail when they teach tools without judgment. Caldwell's program is statistics-first: you learn when a model is lying to you before you learn to build a bigger one. A required domain minor — health, business, or civic data — means you graduate able to talk to the people whose problems you're solving.

Why this program is built this way

  • Statistics-first sequence: inference and study design before machine learning
  • Required domain minor: health, business, or civic data
  • Civic Data Studio partners with the City of Arden Falls on open-data projects
  • Hybrid and evening delivery for most upper-year courses

The four years, year by year

Year 1

Statistical thinking and code

  • STAT 110 — Data, Evidence & Uncertainty
  • COMP 110 — Programming Fundamentals (Python)
  • MATH 115 — Linear Algebra for Data Science
  • DATA 120 — Data Wrangling & Visualization

Year 2

Inference before prediction

  • STAT 210 — Statistical Inference
  • STAT 220 — Study Design & Causality
  • COMP 230 — Databases & SQL
  • Domain minor course 1 (health / business / civic)

Year 3

Machine learning, responsibly

  • DATA 310 — Machine Learning Foundations
  • DATA 320 — Data Ethics, Bias & Communication
  • STAT 330 — Bayesian Methods
  • Domain minor courses 2–3

Year 4

The Civic Data Studio

  • DATA 410 — Applied Capstone (Civic Data Studio)
  • DATA 420 — Data Engineering & Pipelines
  • STAT 430 — Time Series & Forecasting
  • Domain minor capstone seminar

What it takes to get in

  • High-school diploma with senior-level math — calculus recommended (minimum 75% average — illustrative)
  • No programming experience required
  • Transfer applicants: statistics and computing credits assessed course-by-course
  • International applicants: English proficiency (e.g. IELTS 6.5 overall)

Full requirements by applicant type — transfer, mature, international — on the admissions page.

Where graduates actually land

  • Data analyst / business-intelligence analyst
  • Data scientist (usually after 1–2 analyst years)
  • Research and policy analyst (civic minor)
  • Analytics engineer

Reported starting salary $56,000–$67,000 reported median starting range

Class of 2024 survey, 70% response rate. Honest note: 'data scientist' titles usually come a year or two in — most grads start as analysts, and the domain minor is what gets the first interview. Illustrative.
