05 · The firm

Built by two people who left the tax mill.

Grace and Daniel started Ledger & Pine in 2016 after too many Aprils meeting good businesses a year too late — after the bad lease was signed, the wrong equipment financed, the payroll mess baked in. The fix wasn't better April meetings. It was refusing the April-only relationship entirely.

A · The short version

Ten years, one idea: the monthly relationship is the product.

The firm opened above a bakery on Quebec Street with eleven clients, most of them tradespeople Daniel knew from his controller years. The offer was strange for 2016: one flat monthly price, books closed every month, and the tax return as a by-product of clean books rather than an annual archaeology dig.

André joined in 2019 to build the CFO practice, and the hourly clock was retired the same year. Today 140-plus businesses run on monthly plans, and 92% of them stayed through last year — the number we manage the firm by, because retention is the only honest scoreboard for recurring work.

We're still on Quebec Street. The bakery is now a poke place, which the partners consider a downgrade.

B · The partners

Three CPAs. Three different jobs.

Grace LiuCPA

Managing Partner — Tax & Owner Planning

Grace spent seven years in the tax group of a national firm before co-founding Ledger & Pine in 2016 — mostly because she was tired of meeting clients only after every decision had already been made. She completed CPA Canada's In-Depth Tax Program and leads every owner-pay and year-end planning cycle in the firm.

Partner — Client Accounting Services

Before co-founding the firm, Daniel was controller of a 40-person mechanical contractor — so he has lived on the other side of a late, useless financial statement. He built Ledger & Pine's monthly-close system and still personally reviews every new client's first three closes. Certified QuickBooks Online ProAdvisor.

André MoreauCPA, CBV

Partner — Advisory & Fractional CFO

André joined in 2019 to build the firm's CFO practice after eight years in corporate finance and a Chartered Business Valuator designation. He runs the budgeting, lender-package, and 13-week cash-flow work for the firm's largest clients — and insists every report fit on two pages or fewer.

Behind the partners: a team of eight — staff accountants, a payroll specialist, and the onboarding lead who has seen every possible state of a QuickBooks file and flinched at none of them.

C · How we work

Four rules that don't bend.

01

Fixed price or no engagement

If we can't scope it, we don't start it. Every client knows the monthly number before any work begins.

02

Plain language, two pages

A report you don't read is a report we shouldn't send. Everything we deliver is written for an owner, not another accountant.

03

Say the uncomfortable number

If a job is losing money or the payroll is too heavy, you'll hear it from us first — with the math attached.

04

No work we can't stand behind

We don't do audits, we don't do aggressive schemes, and we refer out anything beyond our depth. That's why referrals come back.

Meet us before you commit to anything.

The first conversation is a diagnostic, not a pitch — we read your file, tell you what we'd fix, and put one number in writing. If we're not the right firm, we'll say so and refer you.
