FAQ · twelve straight answers

Asked often, answered plainly

If your question isn't here, call or write — Sam answers weekdays, and 'I don't know, let me check with Mara' is an answer we're comfortable giving.

Do you handle electrical emergencies?

No — and we'd rather tell you that on the FAQ page than in a voicemail at midnight. We book planned work: panels, chargers, renovations, rewires, lighting. If you have sparks, smoke, a burning smell, or a dead service right now: switch off the affected breaker (or the main), and call 911 if there's any sign of fire, or your utility for a service problem. Once you're safe, we're glad to do the permanent fix on a scheduled visit.

Are you licensed and insured?

Amp & Anchor operates as a Licensed Electrical Contractor with ESA (licence number on every quote and invoice), carries $5M liability insurance, and every person who touches your wiring is a licensed 309A electrician or a registered apprentice working under one. This is a fictional demo site, so the licence itself is fictional too — but this is exactly the paperwork you should ask any real contractor to show you.

How do estimates and quotes work?

The website calculator gives you an honest planning range with its arithmetic shown. A firm quote comes after a site visit — usually free, except wiring inspections, which are a flat fee because they're real diagnostic work with a written report. Once quoted, the number doesn't move unless the scope does, and scope changes are priced and approved in writing before we act on them.

Is the ESA permit really included?

Yes — filed by us, under our licence, with the fee printed as its own line on the quote. We will not do permit-required work without the notification, even if you ask nicely. It's your protection at claim time and resale, and it's our licence on the line.

Can you just give me a rewire price over the phone?

No, and we'd encourage you not to trust anyone who will. Century homes are patchworks — most 'knob-and-tube houses' are 30–70% already rewired by previous owners. The $280–$420 inspection tells you what's actually live, and it's credited against any rewire we do. Quoting five figures sight-unseen isn't confidence; it's padding.

Do I need a panel upgrade to add an EV charger?

Often not. We run the demand calculation first — many 100 A homes carry a 32 A charger comfortably, and a load-management device can make a 48 A unit work without touching the service. The upgrade is the right answer only when the arithmetic says so. We show you the arithmetic.

Will my insurance company accept your reports?

Our inspection reports and completion letters are written for exactly that audience — insurer-ready, with photos, licence number, and the certificate of acceptance where an inspection applies. Aluminum remediation and K&T decommissioning letters are the two we're asked for most.

How far out are you booking?

Typically one to three weeks for most projects; wiring inspections usually inside a week. Renovation rough-ins are scheduled around your contractor's framing dates — tell us the schedule and we slot in. If a job ahead of yours runs long, Sam calls you before the day, not on it.

Do you charge a deposit?

Nothing until work is scheduled. Then 10% to hold the date on projects over $2,000, balance on completion after you've walked the work with us. Rewires over $10,000 can be staged and paid by storey. We don't take full payment up front, and neither should anyone else you hire.

Who patches the drywall and plaster afterwards?

We cut carefully and few jobs need more than a handful of access openings — but patching and painting are their own trades and we don't pretend to do them well. Rewire quotes say 'patching by others' in plain text, and we can refer local patchers we've watched work.

Can I supply my own fixtures or charger?

Absolutely — labour pricing is identical either way. We'll flag anything that isn't certified for Canada (look for cUL/CSA marks) before it goes in, because uncertified gear fails inspection and we won't install it. If we supply, it's at cost plus 10% with receipts shown.

What's your warranty?

Two years on workmanship, on paper, transferable if you sell the house. Manufacturer warranties on panels, breakers, and chargers pass through to you with the registration done before we leave. If something we wired fails inside the warranty, the return visit costs you nothing — including the ones that turn out to be the utility's fault.

Still curious? The calculator answers the "roughly how much" questions, and the old-wiring guide answers the "should I worry" ones.
