What an outage looks like

About fifteen seconds of dark, then an ordinary evening.

A standby generator does not need you home. Here is the usual sequence when the utility power drops and comes back.

  1. 0 s Utility power drops The transfer switch notices within a second.
  2. ~5 s It waits to be sure Short flickers do not start the engine.
  3. ~10 s Engine starts It warms up for a few seconds before taking load.
  4. ~15 s House moves over Heat, well, fridge and lights come back on.
  5. Later Power returns It waits a minute, hands the house back, then cools down and goes back to Ready.

Timings are typical for air-cooled home units and vary by model and settings.

Fuel

Natural gas or propane: whichever your street has.

Gas reaches parts of Concord and a few towns around it. Most rural roads run on propane. We check your address before the site visit, so the quote is built on the right fuel from the start.

Natural gas

Piped to the house by the utility. Nothing to refill.

  • Reaches parts of Concord and a few neighboring towns
  • Most air-cooled units make about 10% less power on natural gas, so we size for it
  • The utility may need to upgrade your meter, which can add a few weeks
  • No tank, no deliveries, runs as long as the gas flows

Propane

Stored on site in a tank your propane supplier sets and fills.

  • The usual choice on rural roads without gas service
  • A 500-gallon tank (filled to about 80%) runs a 22 kW unit for roughly a week at half load
  • Your propane supplier sets the tank; lease or buy through them
  • We coordinate the tank spot, the regulator and the line to the generator

Maintenance plans

A generator that waits all year still needs a visit.

Oil, filters, plugs and the battery age even when the unit only exercises. Every plan visit ends with a transfer test under your house's real load and a written report. Plans never renew unless you say yes.

  • Annual

    $289/yr

    1 visit a year

  • Twice a year

    $449/yr

2 visits a year (spring and fall)

  • Monitoring add-on

    $99/yr

    Added to either plan

  • Ruth walked through the house with a list and asked what we actually needed. They talked us out of the bigger unit and put a load module on the dryer instead. The quote matched the bill to the dollar.

Margaret H., Hopkinton 22 kW standby install · March 2026

  • Our generator showed a red light and the company that installed it had closed. Kofi found a dead battery and a loose plug wire, showed me both, and had it running the same visit.

Dev P., Bow Repair, another installer's unit · January 2026

  • Good install and a tidy crew. It took longer than we hoped because the propane company was slow setting the tank, which Keeplight warned us about. Four stars only because of the wait.
