For limited income and savings

SSI claims

Overview

Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is a needs-based program. It does not depend on work credits, so it can help people who have not worked much, or at all, and children with disabilities.

SSI has two sets of rules: the same medical rules as SSDI, and strict limits on income, savings and some kinds of help you get from others. We help you with both sides, so a money question does not sink a strong medical claim.

Is this page for you?

  • Your household has limited income and savings
  • You have not worked enough to qualify for SSDI
  • You are applying for a child with a disability
  • Your SSDI amount is low and you wonder if SSI can add to it

What we do

  1. 1

    Check the money rules first

We go over income, savings, who you live with and help from family, because these can change whether you qualify and how much you get.

  2. 2

    Build the medical side

We gather records from every provider, including community clinics and school records for children.

  3. 3

    Prepare you for the interview

SSI usually includes an interview about your living situation and finances. We tell you what they will ask and what papers to bring.

  4. 4

    Report changes the right way

SSI has ongoing reporting rules. We explain what to report and when, to help you avoid overpayments later.

What to gather

Do not wait to call until you have everything. We can help find what is missing.

  • Bank statements and a list of anything you own of value
  • Rent or mortgage papers, and who you live with
  • Any income, including help from family or friends
  • Medical records, and school records for a child
  • Birth certificate or proof of citizenship or lawful status

How long it takes

SSI decisions often take several months. SSI back pay generally starts the month after you apply, so filing sooner matters.

An honest note

Even with a strong medical case, SSI can be denied for money reasons alone. We look at both sides early so there are fewer surprises.

Common questions

Does SSI come with health coverage?

In many states, including New Mexico, SSI usually comes with Medicaid. We explain how that works for your situation.

Can my child get SSI?

Yes, if the child has a qualifying disability and the household meets the income and savings rules. Social Security counts some of the parents' income and resources. We help gather school and medical records.

Will help from my family lower my SSI?

It can. Free rent or groceries may count as income under SSI rules. We explain the rules so you can report it correctly.
