Why Holloway

What separates a real hardware store

Staff who actually use what they sell
Our 47 employees average 14 years of tenure. Most are weekend woodworkers, gardeners, plumbers, painters, mechanics. They’ve done your project — probably twice. Ask any question; you’ll get a real answer.
Walk in, walk out — fast
20 minutes from any Twin Cities location. No checkout lines wrapping around the store. No 45-minute wait at the paint counter on Saturday. Pick up + go.
Specialty + restoration parts
Vintage hardware (1920s-1980s), restoration parts, hard-to-find plumbing, period door hardware, antique-style furniture pulls. Things big-box stopped stocking decades ago.
Knife sharpening (since 1968)
Every Tuesday + Saturday. $8 per knife. Ready next day. We’ve been sharpening knives for some Twin Cities families for 4 generations. Bring grandma’s carving set.
Paint color matching
Bring a sample (chip, fabric, photo). We match it. Benjamin Moore + Sherwin-Williams stocked. Gallon mixing in 5 minutes (vs. 45-min wait at big-box).
Garden expertise (climate-suited)
Minnesota gardening is its own thing. Cool-climate plants, MN-tested varieties, local growing schedules. Spring + summer garden center; we know what works in Zone 4.
The Holloway visit

What it's like

  1. 1
    Walk in to friendly
Greeted at the door. Most staff know returning customers by name (you’ll be one in 2 visits). Layout is rational; signs make sense; you can find what you need.
  2. 2
    Ask anyone for help
Every employee can help with most projects. For specialty work (paint, plumbing, electrical, garden) we have department specialists. No ‘I don’t know, let me find someone’ runaround.
  3. 3
Get the right thing for your project
We’ll often ask 2-3 questions about your project before recommending a product. Saves you returning the wrong thing. Saves you frustration on the project.
  4. 4
Drive home with what you needed
Most customers in/out in 15-20 minutes. Same-store consistency across 3 locations. Knife sharpening + paint matching + plumbing parts = same expertise wherever you visit.

Customer voices

What customers say

Brought my dad’s 1968 carving knife to Holloway for sharpening. He bought it there originally. Same family. Same shop. Same care. The blade is 57 years old and it cuts like new. That’s service that lasts.

Big-box couldn’t find a 1923 mortise lock for our home renovation. Spent 6 hours online searching. Holloway’s plumbing/hardware specialist had two in stock + ordered me a third. Saved my project + my sanity.

I’m a contractor; I shop everywhere. Holloway is where I go when I need expertise + when the project is non-standard. Big-box for commodity items; Holloway for everything else. Both have their place.
