How to choose your first serious headphones
Open-back or closed? What do impedance and sensitivity actually mean for you? A plain-English map of the decisions that matter — and the ones that don't.
Start with where you'll listen, not what you'll buy
The single biggest fork in the road is open-back versus closed-back, and it's decided by your room, not your ears. Open-back headphones vent the driver to the air: you get a more spacious, natural presentation, and in exchange everyone near you hears a tinny whisper of your music — and you hear the dishwasher.
If you listen alone at a desk or in a den, open-back is usually the answer (start with the Ash, aspire to the HP-90). If you share space, commute, or record vocals, you want closed-back isolation — the Sable is our benchmark there.
Impedance and sensitivity, translated
Impedance (measured in ohms, Ω) and sensitivity (dB/mW) together tell you how much amplifier a headphone needs. A high-sensitivity, low-impedance design like the Sable (22 Ω, 100 dB/mW) will play loud and clean from nearly anything. A 150 Ω design like the HP-60 wants more voltage than a laptop jack delivers — it will play, but flat and polite instead of vivid.
The rule of thumb we use in the showroom: under 50 Ω and over 100 dB/mW, don't worry about it. Above 100 Ω, or any planar magnetic driver, plan for a real amp. Our rig builder encodes exactly this logic and will warn you about mismatches.
Spend your budget where it's audible
A $450 headphone from a $90 source beats a $200 headphone from a $350 source, every time — transducers are where the sound is made. Get the headphone right first, feed it adequately second, and upgrade the electronics only when you know what you're missing.
That's also why everything we sell carries a 30-day home trial. Showrooms are useful; your sofa on a Tuesday night is the real test bench.
