Competition Teams

A season-long team: design a robot, keep an engineering notebook, practise driving and present to judges at regional events.

MATCH 2:30 week 7

$690 spring team, $1,650 full season

About the teams

Competition teams are for kids who want more than one class a week. Each team of four to six designs, builds and programs a robot for a yearly challenge, then takes it to regional youth robotics events.

Teams also keep an engineering notebook and practise talking to judges about their choices. We coach the process. We do not promise trophies, and we tell families that up front.

What we use

  • Competition robot kits
  • Block code and Python
  • CAD sketches
  • An engineering notebook

What your child will make

team options

Teams and seasons

Three ways in, depending on age and how much time your family can give. No tryouts: a placement session matches kids to the right team.

  1. T1

    Rookie spring team

    Ages 9 to 13

Learns: Teamwork, a first competition robot and notebook habits.

Project: Robot and notebook for an April scrimmage

  2. T2

    Junior league team

    Ages 9 to 12

Learns: A full season: robot game, innovation project and judging.

Project: Season robot, research project and presentation

  3. T3

    Senior league team

    Ages 12 to 17

Learns: Bigger robots, alliances, driver practice and a detailed notebook.

Project: Season robot, autonomous routine and notebook

Team fees

No trophy promises. Teams are judged on the robot, the engineering notebook and teamwork. We coach all three. Some seasons a team wins an award; many seasons it doesn't. Families pay for coaching, parts and entries, never for a result.

A practice, minute by minute

  1. Stand-up 15 min

What we tried, what broke, what's next. Notebook keeper writes it down.

  2. Sub-teams 45 min

Build, code and notebook groups work at the same time.

  3. Test runs 45 min

Timed runs on the practice field. Drivers rotate.

  4. Review 15 min

Coaches and team agree on next week's goal.

Total: 2 h.

We provide

  • Robot kits, spare parts and a full practice field
  • League registration for the team
  • A team shirt
  • Two coaches at every practice and event

Your child brings

  • Commitment to the team schedule
  • Closed-toe shoes
  • Rides to events (we help families carpool)

Teams questions

Do you have tryouts?

No. We hold a placement session to match kids to a team by age and experience. If more students sign up than we have seats, we start a waitlist in sign-up order.

Will my child's team win?

We don't know, and we won't promise it. Teams are judged on the robot, the notebook and teamwork. We coach all three and celebrate progress either way.

How much travel is there?

Most regional events are within about an hour of Markham, on Saturdays. Families drive; we help set up carpools. Overnight trips only happen if a team qualifies for a later event, and they are optional.
