Robotics

Build it with your hands, then program it to move. Motors, sensors and real problem solving, from age 5.

About this class

Robotics is where kids find out that code has to work in the real world. A wheel slips, a sensor sees the wrong thing, and they figure out why. That is engineering, and it happens every class.

Kits stay at the academy, so nothing gets lost at home. Students build in pairs, swap roles every class, and keep a short build log so you can see what they tried.

What we use

  • Floor robots with button code
  • Snap-together robot kits
  • Distance, colour and touch sensors
  • Block code, then Python, for the robot

What your child will make

4 levels

The levels, in order

Each level is about one term and ends with a project. Kids move up when the project shows they're ready, not on a birthday. Ages are a guide.

  1. R0

    Robotics Sparks

    Ages 5 to 7

Learns: Sequences, directions and counting steps with floor robots and big parts.

Project: A robot that delivers a letter across a map

  2. R1

    Robotics Builders

    Ages 8 to 10

Learns: Motors, gears, a first sensor and block code for the robot.

Project: A car that stops before it hits a wall

  3. R2

    Robotics Makers 1

    Ages 11 to 13

Learns: Several sensors, loops with conditions and fair testing.

Project: A line follower that handles curves

  4. R3

    Robotics Makers 2

    Ages 12 to 14

Learns: Planning, simple Python on the robot and design changes after testing.

Project: A maze solver that works on a new maze

A class, minute by minute

  1. Build check 10 min

Pairs check their robot against last week's photo and swap roles.

  2. Build 25 min

One new part or mechanism, with the instructor at the table.

  3. Code and test 25 min

Program the robot, run it on the mat, measure and adjust.

  4. Show and log 15 min

Each pair demos their run and writes what changed in the build log.

Total: 1 h 15 min.

We provide

  • All kits, parts and batteries
  • A shared build log for each pair
  • Safety glasses for any cutting or tool work
  • Tablets or laptops for coding the robot

Your child brings

  • Closed-toe shoes
  • Long hair tied back on build days
  • A water bottle

Robotics questions

Can my 5-year-old really do robotics?

Yes, at Sparks level. The robots are big and sturdy, classes are 60 minutes, there are never more than 6 children, and two adults are always in the room.

Do kids take the robot home?

Kits stay at the lab so pieces don't go missing. Makers can buy an optional take-home kit for $95 if they want to keep building.

Is there any soldering or hot tools?

Only for ages 11 and up, with safety glasses, a fume fan and an instructor at the bench. Younger groups use snap parts and low-heat glue only.

when trial class booked

Try a robotics class first.

The trial is a full class with kids at your child's level. No card, no contract. Stay for the last 10 minutes and see what they built.
