Admissions and visiting
When should we apply?
Applications for Fall 2027 open September 1, and the priority deadline is December 1. After that we consider applications as space allows, and after April 10 we run rolling admissions for any spaces left. Most families tour in the fall and apply by December.
Does my child need to read before junior kindergarten or kindergarten?
No. Early reading is a developmental timeline, not a talent signal. Our youngest applicants join a play-based visit with a few other children. We look for readiness and curiosity, not reading.
Is there an entrance test?
Not for JK to Grade 1. Applicants for Grades 2 to 12 spend a visit day with their would-be class, and older students also do a short written exercise. We tell you exactly what it involves before the day, so there's nothing to prepare or buy.
Can we visit in the summer?
Yes. Tours run all year. In July and August you'll see summer programs instead of regular classes, and the ravine is at its best.
Do siblings get priority?
Yes, siblings of current students get priority. It's not a guarantee: if a grade is full, it's full, and we'll tell you where you stand early rather than late.
Do you take students mid-year?
Yes, when there's space in the grade. Book a private family visit and tell us your timeline. Families moving to Elmbridge mid-year are a regular part of school life here.

Tuition and indexed tuition
How much is tuition?
For 2026-27, tuition is $26,400 in the Lower School, $29,800 in the Middle School, and $33,600 in the Upper School (illustrative figures for this sample site). The full table, with every extra cost, is on the tuition page.
What does tuition include?
Hot lunch every day, all curricular trips including the Grade 8 Ridge Hike, books and materials, fabrication-lab supplies, instrument loans for string orchestra, and extended day until 5:30 p.m. for Lower School families.
How does indexed tuition work?
You complete one confidential financial review with an independent service. It recommends a range, and our committee sets your tuition inside it. No teacher is ever involved or told. About 28% of families pay an indexed rate.
When will we know what we'll pay?
Your indexed tuition arrives in the same letter as the admission decision. You never have to accept a place before you know the price.
Are there merit scholarships?
Only one: two Marlowe Scholars awards for Grade 9 entry, each worth 50% of tuition. They are competitive. Below Grade 9, all tuition help is based on need.
Can we pay monthly?
Yes. Families can pay in one, two, or ten instalments. The tuition office sets up the plan and answers its own phone.
5 questions
Learning and support
How big are classes?
The average class is 16 students, and the student-to-teacher ratio is 8 to 1. JK to Grade 1 classes have two adults in the room.
How do you support children who learn differently?
Every Lower School grade has a reading specialist built in, and each division has learning support staff. Tell us about your child on the tour. We'll be honest about what we can support well, and what we can't.
How much homework is there?
Very little in the Lower School beyond reading at home. Around an hour on most nights in the Middle School, and more in the Upper School, with a homework-free weekend each term.
Which languages do you teach?
Spanish and German, both starting in junior kindergarten. Students keep at least one through Grade 11, and many keep both to graduation.
How does college counselling work?
Each counsellor works with about forty students, starting properly in Grade 10. The list starts from what your child wants to do, not from a ranking.

Daily life
What are the school hours?
The day runs from about 8:15 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Extended day with clubs and a quiet homework room runs until 5:30 p.m. for Lower School families, included in tuition.
Is there a bus?
Yes. Four optional routes cover Elmbridge for $1,900 a year. Many families also carpool through the parent portal's opt-in directory.
Is there a uniform?
A dress code, not a full uniform: collared shirts or Marlowe tops in navy, white, or green. Upper School students wear blazers for assemblies and Thesis Night.
Is Marlowe a religious school?
No. Marlowe is an independent, non-denominational day school. The chapel is part of our history and is now a library and meeting room.
What's the phone policy?
From JK to Grade 8, phones stay in lockers from the first bell to the last. Upper School students may use them in the commons, but not in class.
