Financial aid

How it works

Need-blind admissions for K-2
Admissions decisions for K, Grade 1, and Grade 2 made without seeing financial aid application. Aid follows for accepted students. Possible because of significant endowment + alumni giving.
Need-aware admissions Grade 3+
For Grade 3 through Upper School, we are need-aware. Aid availability factors into admissions decisions for late-cycle waiting list movement; not for primary admissions decisions.
Aid amounts
Average award $32,000. Range $5,000 to $52,800 (full tuition). Most awards $20,000-$45,000. Full-tuition awards exist but aren’t common.
Aid is need-based
We don’t do merit aid. Aid is calculated based on demonstrated financial need (using SSS School and Student Services online application). The same family could receive different aid in different years if financial circumstances change.
Aid renewal
Aid is awarded annually + reapplied for each year. Most families maintain similar aid amounts year-over-year unless circumstances change. Aid renewal is by re-application + re-assessment, not automatic.
Outside aid + scholarships
We accept outside scholarships (organizational, civic, religious). Outside aid reduces our need-based aid dollar-for-dollar (we don’t allow stacking).
How to apply for aid

Step by step

Step 1 — SSS application
Submit Parent Financial Statement via SSS (School and Student Services). Includes income, assets, liabilities, household composition. Available October 1; due January 15 with admissions application.
Step 2 — Tax documents
Most recent year’s tax return. We may request 2 years of tax returns. Documents go directly to SSS, not to Marlowe.
Step 3 — Marlowe-specific supplement
Brief Marlowe-specific aid supplement form. Asks about specific family circumstances + special situations. Supplements SSS data with our own context.
Step 4 — SSS analysis
SSS calculates expected family contribution + recommends aid amount. Marlowe makes final aid award decisions, often within +/- 15% of SSS recommendation.
Step 5 — Aid notification
Aid awards released with admissions decisions on March 15. Includes specific dollar amount + total tuition responsibility.
Step 6 — Annual renewal
Re-apply each year. Same SSS process. Aid awards adjust for changing family circumstances. Most families see similar aid year over year unless circumstances change materially.
Aid + cost questions

What families ask

  • No. We don’t award scholarships based on academic performance, athletic achievement, or talent. All financial aid is need-based. We believe merit aid distorts the broader access mission of need-based aid.
