Nothing is prescribed until a clinician has read two morning lab draws. How it works

Program · LAB

Men's lab testing

Blood drawn in our own draw room, early in the morning when testosterone is measured best. Results in 2 to 4 business days, explained by a clinician, and yours to keep.

Sample panel · illustrative

7:40 a.m. draw

Draw 1 of 2
  • Total testosterone 248 ng/dL
Below range Range 264 to 916
  • Free testosterone 5.1 ng/dL
Low end Range 4.6 to 22.4
  • Hematocrit 44.2 %
In range Range 38.5 to 50
  • PSA 0.8 ng/mL
In range Range 0 to 4
  • LH 3.1 mIU/mL
In range Range 1.7 to 8.6
Not a real patient. One low reading is not a diagnosis: a second morning draw, your symptoms and a clinician's exam come first. Ranges vary by lab.

In plain words.

Testosterone is highest in the morning and changes from day to day. One afternoon reading, or one home finger-prick test, can make a normal man look low or a low man look normal. So we draw early, and we draw twice before we call anything low.

You can book labs on their own, or labs with a consult. Either way, a clinician reads every result, and you get a copy of the full report in plain language with the lab's own reference ranges.

Why men book labs here

  • To find out if symptoms might be hormone related
  • To get a second opinion on a result from somewhere else
  • To check numbers before starting, or while on, testosterone from another prescriber
  • A yearly check of blood count, PSA, sugar and cholesterol

Candidacy

Who books labs here.

Works well if

  • You can come in between 7:00 and 10:30 a.m.
  • You can fast for 8 hours before the draw if your panel includes sugar and cholesterol
  • You are 18 or older

Not the right place if

  • You need urgent testing for chest pain, fainting or severe symptoms. Go to an emergency room
  • You need labs billed to insurance. We can send a requisition to an in-network lab instead

How it works here

What happens, and when.

  1. Book

    Pick a morning slot

7:00 to 10:30 a.m., Monday to Friday, plus Saturday mornings.

  2. Draw

    About 10 minutes

Our draw room has two chairs and a door that closes. Most panels take 3 to 4 tubes.

  3. 2 to 4 days

    Results ready

We message you when they are in. Nothing is posted until a clinician has read them.

  4. Review

    Explained, not just sent

A results visit, or a written note for labs-only panels. You keep the PDF.

Panels.

Before your draw

Good to know.

Two draws, not one
A diagnosis of low testosterone needs two low morning readings. If your first result is low, the second draw is included in the price.
Bruising
A small bruise where the needle went in is common and fades in a few days. Tell us if you take blood thinners or have fainted during draws before.
Fasting
Water is fine, and keep taking your usual medications unless we say otherwise. Skip coffee and food for 8 hours if your panel includes sugar and cholesterol.
Biotin
Biotin supplements (often in hair and nail vitamins) can throw off some hormone tests. Stop them 3 days before your draw.

Common questions.

All questions
Can I use a home test kit instead?

Home finger-prick kits can be a starting point, but most are not reliable enough to diagnose low testosterone or to dose treatment. We use venous blood drawn in the morning.

Will you share my results with my employer or insurer?

No. Your results go to you and to the clinicians caring for you. We share them with another doctor only when you ask us to, in writing.

Can I order just one test?

Yes. A single morning testosterone is $59 to $79. We will still have a clinician look at it before it posts.

Important safety information

Every treatment here is prescribed only after a licensed clinician reviews your history and labs. This is a summary, not medical advice. Questions

Testosterone therapy
Not for men with normal testosterone, prostate or breast cancer, or a high hematocrit. Can cause infertility that does not always reverse, raise red blood cell counts and PSA, and worsen sleep apnea. Requires blood work at 6 to 8 weeks, 3 to 6 months, 12 months and every 6 to 12 months after. Gel can transfer to others by skin contact. Testosterone is a Schedule III controlled substance.
ED medication
Never take with nitrates or poppers: blood pressure can drop dangerously. Get emergency care for sudden vision or hearing loss, or an erection lasting more than 4 hours. Common side effects are headache, flushing and a stuffy nose.
GLP-1 medicines
Not used with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer or MEN2. Nausea and constipation are common early. Severe belly pain can signal pancreatitis or gallbladder problems and needs urgent care.
Finasteride and minoxidil
Finasteride can cause sexual side effects and mood changes, and it halves PSA readings. Minoxidil can cause shedding at first, scalp irritation and, as a tablet, dizziness or fluid retention. Benefits fade after stopping.
