About Daylight
A bankruptcy firm that explains first and files second
Daylight started in 2009 with one attorney and one rule: nobody leaves our office feeling small. We are still small on purpose, so you always know who is handling your case.
Our story
It started at a legal aid desk
Before Daylight, Renée Okafor spent years at a legal aid clinic on Milwaukee's South Side. The people who came in were not careless. They had been laid off, or sick, or left with a spouse's debts. What they needed most, before any form, was someone to explain what was happening in words that made sense.
She opened Daylight to do exactly that, with flat fees people could plan around. Theo joined in 2016 after years at a mortgage servicer, Jasmine in 2018, and Hannah in 2019 after keeping the books for her family's bakery through a hard stretch. Between us, we have sat on most sides of the table.
We file Chapter 7 and Chapter 13 cases in the federal bankruptcy court for eastern Wisconsin, defend foreclosures in county circuit courts, and help people who turn out not to need bankruptcy at all.

What we promise, and what we never will
-
No judgement, ever
Debt usually starts with a job loss, a diagnosis, a divorce or a business that did not work out. We look at the numbers with you, not at you.
-
Plain words
Every legal term gets explained the first time we use it. If we lose you, that is our mistake to fix.
-
Fees in writing
A flat fee on paper after the free consultation. It changes only if your case changes, and we say why.
-
We'll tell you not to file
If an alternative is cheaper and safer, you will hear it from us first, in writing.
What we will never do: promise that a debt will be wiped out, promise that a filing will succeed, or rush you with "today only" pricing. A good outcome depends on the facts, and we will tell you honestly what yours look like.
