Ninebark Family law for parents

Questions parents and grandparents ask

Straight answers to the questions we hear every week. General information about Washington family law, not advice for your specific case.

Getting started

Is the first call free?

Yes. A 15-minute call with Priya is free. She checks for deadlines and books the right attorney. The full 60-minute strategy consult is $150, credited toward your fee if you hire us.

I was just served. What should I do first?

Write down the date you received the papers and call us. Responses have deadlines. Don't ignore them, and don't sign anything new until you understand it.

Will the other parent know I talked to a lawyer?

No. Your consult is confidential. We also ask whether it is safe to leave voicemails or send email, and we follow your answer.

Do you take cases outside Spokane County?

Yes. We regularly handle cases in Spokane, Stevens, Lincoln, Pend Oreille and Whitman counties, and many hearings can now be attended by video.

Child support

Do you help parents who pay support, or only parents who receive it?

Both. We help set, review, modify and enforce support for either parent. You get the same honest math either way.

Can support be changed if my income changes?

Often, yes. Orders can be reviewed after a set time or when there is a substantial change. The change usually starts from when you file, so don't wait.

Parenting plans and fathers

Do Washington courts favor mothers?

No. The law is written for parents, not mothers or fathers, and it asks what serves the child. What matters is each parent's role, reliability and the child's needs.

Will my child have to talk to the judge?

Rarely, especially with younger children. When a child's view matters, courts usually hear it through a neutral professional, not on the witness stand.

Can you guarantee a 50/50 schedule?

No lawyer can honestly guarantee any schedule. We can help you build and present a plan that fits your child's life and your real availability.

Paternity

How long does a parentage case take?

An agreed case can take a few months. Cases with testing or disputes take longer. We give you a realistic timeline at the consult.

Will a test be ordered if the other parent refuses?

In a parentage case, a court can order genetic testing. We will explain how that works in your situation.

Grandparents

Why do you start grandparents with a written review?

Because the law is narrow, and a lawsuit that can't succeed costs money and can make family relationships worse. The review tells you honestly where you stand first.

Can you help if we're already raising our grandchildren?

Yes. We help caregivers get the legal authority they need for school and medical decisions, and explain the options in plain words.

Fees

What does a flat fee cover?

Exactly the work listed for that service. If the case turns contested, we stop and give you a written estimate before any hourly billing starts.

Do you offer payment plans?

Yes, on most flat fees, over three to six months. Ask at your consult.
