Attorneys

The people who answer your call.

Three business lawyers and a paralegal. One of us leads your matter from the first call to the last signature, and a second lawyer reads anything big before it goes out.

Portrait of attorney Renée Abara, smiling, in a cream cardigan

Founding attorney

Renée Abara

  • Business formation
  • Contracts
  • Outside general counsel

Renée grew up behind the counter of her parents' dry cleaning shop, doing the books at the kitchen table. She spent eight years at a large firm where small business clients got the junior associate and the big bill, and started Countersign in 2014 to do it the other way.

She handles most of our formation work and outside counsel plans, and she's the one who insists every document comes with a one-page summary.

Experience:
Practicing since 2006
Outside work:
Teaches a free contract basics workshop for new owners twice a year.

Founding attorney

Ken Moriyama

  • Buying or selling a business
  • Partnership agreements

Before law school Ken spent four years as a staff accountant, which is why he reads the financial statements in a due diligence file before he reads the contracts.

He handles our purchase and sale work and most partnership agreements, and he likes deals that close on time with no surprises on the last day.

Experience:
Practicing since 2009
Outside work:
Coaches a youth soccer team in Meridian on Saturdays in the fall.

Attorney

Hallie Brandt

  • Business disputes
  • Negotiation and mediation

Hallie joined Countersign in 2019 after six years handling commercial disputes. She settles early when settling makes sense, and prepares for court when it doesn't.

Her options memos are known around the office for one line at the end: what she would do if it were her business.

Experience:
Practicing since 2013
Outside work:
Volunteers as a mediator in small claims sessions a few times a year.

Paralegal and client coordinator

Marisol Ortega

  • Intake and scheduling
  • Compliance calendars
  • Closings

Marisol is usually the first person you talk to. She runs intake, keeps every client's compliance calendar and makes sure closing day has every signature it needs.

She speaks English and Spanish, and can set up a consult with an interpreter for other languages.

Experience:
With Countersign since 2016
Outside work:
Bakes for every client's opening day, whether they ask or not.
