The fourteen questions couples actually ask

Your rain plan is reserved the day you book — the Conservatory for up to 90 guests standing or 60 seated, or the Great Hall for anything bigger. At 10:00 a.m. on the day, our coordinator walks the radar with you and you make the call together. Moving inside never costs a fee, and the hall is dressed either way, so the decision is about weather, not sunk costs.

Candles, yes — it's half the point of the place. Every flame must sit in a hurricane or votive (the house candle package includes ninety of them). Open flame outside glass — taper sparklers, hand-held candles, fire performers — isn't permitted indoors. A sparkler send-off is welcome in the gravel courtyard until 10:30 p.m., with sand buckets provided.

Anything freestanding, tied, or clamped is fine. Nothing nailed, stapled, or taped to the 1872 timber — our steward carries the right clamps and wire, so ask before you improvise. No confetti, glitter, or artificial petals anywhere on the estate (real petals in the garden are fine); no floral foam in the hall. Everything you bring in leaves the same night unless you've booked the Estate Weekend.

The estate holds the liquor licence, so all alcohol is poured by our Smart Serve staff and BYO isn't possible — including favours that are opened on site. Bar packages are published on the packages page; consumption billing is available too. Last call is 10:30 p.m. every night, no exceptions, because the curfew isn't ours — it's the township's.

The parking field, garden aisle, courtyard, Great Hall, and Conservatory courtyard entrance are all step-free on firm crushed limestone or stone floors. The hall has two accessible washrooms, and one getting-ready suite is on the farmhouse ground floor. The upper farmhouse rooms are stairs-only — we're honest about that, and the ground-floor suite is always assigned first to whoever needs it.

Amplified music outdoors ends at 10:00 p.m. and the hall closes at 11:00 p.m. — that's a Caledon noise bylaw, not a house preference, and no venue in the township can honestly promise later. Most couples run the dance floor 8:30–10:45 and walk out through a courtyard send-off. The farmhouse (Estate Weekend) can keep a quiet fire going past midnight.

The garden seats 180 and the hall dines 160 with a full dance floor, so 160 is the practical ceiling for a seated dinner wedding and 180 works for a cocktail-format reception. There's no guest minimum on any package — but the catering minimums published with each package apply no matter the count, so under about 40 guests The Winter House is usually the honest recommendation.

Yes — leashed, outdoors, with a designated handler who isn't in the wedding party, and home before dinner. The garden has seen more ring-bearer dogs than ring-bearer children. Dogs can't enter the hall or conservatory during service (health code), and the millpond is fenced but tempting, so the handler rule is firm.

Food and bar come from the estate kitchen — it's the one closed category, and it's why we can publish real per-guest prices and hold them. The exception: cultural menus our chefs can't cook honestly. For those we co-cater, bringing a specialist of your choosing into the kitchen alongside our team; there's no surcharge for the arrangement beyond that caterer's own fees.

A held Saturday has a seven-day courtesy hold on it — another couple toured, asked us to pencil them in, and has a week to sign before it opens again automatically. Holds are free, first-come, and never extended, which keeps the calendar honest for everyone. If your date shows held, inquire anyway: about a third of holds release.

Nothing is charged to hold a date. On signing, 25% of the venue fee; 50% six months out; the balance plus catering on final numbers thirty days before. If you cancel more than a year out, everything but $1,000 is returned; inside a year, payments are returned only if we re-book your date — and we genuinely try, because empty Saturdays help nobody.

Every package includes a one-hour rehearsal slot on a weekday earlier in your week, scheduled around that week's weddings. The Estate Weekend goes further — Friday afternoon is yours, and most weekend couples rehearse at 4 p.m. and walk straight into their conservatory rehearsal dinner.

The lane, courtyard, paths, and parking are cleared and salted by our own crew — a 6 a.m. wedding-day pass is in the winter contract, not a favour. The hall is fully insulated and the conservatory runs a woodstove plus radiant floors. The one honest winter caveat: the garden is closed, so winter ceremonies happen indoors or at the courtyard bonfire, and photos happen in whatever the sky gives you.

Our coordinator manages everything that touches the estate: the timeline against the building, vendor load-ins, the rain call, tables and candles, and the day-of steward who shadows your evening. What we honestly don't do is design your wedding, book your vendors, or run your rehearsal-dinner seating chart — that's a planner, and for full-design weddings we recommend hiring one (two we trust are on the vendors page).
