24-hour and overnight care

Someone awake in the house all night, or around the clock, so nobody is alone when they get up at 3 am.

Care we offer

How it helps

Night is when many falls happen and when family caregivers stop getting sleep. Our overnight caregivers stay awake the whole shift. They help your parent to the bathroom, settle them when they're restless, and are there if anything goes wrong. For parents who need help any time of day, 24-hour care is two 12-hour awake shifts, every day, with a small team that rotates.

This may be right if

  • Dad gets up several times a night and has fallen before
  • Mom wanders at night or gets confused when she wakes
  • You or your other parent haven't slept a full night in months
  • Your parent needs help at any hour and wants to stay home

What a visit can include

You and your parent choose what's in the care plan. Caregivers follow it, and you can change it any time.

Overnight

  • An awake caregiver, all shift long
  • Help to the bathroom and back to bed
  • Settling and reassurance when your parent can't sleep
  • Quiet tasks: laundry, dishes, prepping breakfast

Around the clock

  • Everything in personal and companion care, any hour
  • Two 12-hour shifts a day from a small rotating team
  • Shift-change notes so nothing gets lost between caregivers

Non-medical care

What caregivers don't do here

  • Live-in care where the caregiver sleeps. Our caregivers stay awake on every overnight shift
  • Nursing care or medical monitoring

Not sure if a task is medical? Ask us at the assessment. We'd rather say no clearly than guess.

A typical overnight shift

An example. Every plan is built around your parent's own routine.

  1. 9:00 pm Arrive, hear from family or the day caregiver how the day went.
  2. 9:30 pm Help with getting ready for bed: washing up, pajamas, the bathroom.
  3. 11:00 pm Quiet house. The caregiver stays awake, with a light on in the next room.
  4. 2:40 am Help to the bathroom and back to bed, then a few minutes of calm talk.
  5. 6:00 am Set out breakfast and the morning pills reminder.
  6. 7:00 am Hand over to family or the day caregiver with a written note.

Questions families ask

All questions
Why is the 24-hour rate lower per hour?

Longer shifts let us schedule more simply, so we pass some of that on. At $34 to $37 an hour, 24-hour care works out to about $816 to $888 a day.

Does the caregiver sleep at night?

No. Every overnight caregiver stays awake for the whole shift. We don't offer live-in care where the caregiver sleeps.
