Patients & visitors

Everything a visit involves, minus the guesswork

Hours, parking, records, and money questions — answered the way we'd want them answered for our own families.

Visiting

Visiting hours

Visitors are part of care, not an interruption to it. General hours are 8 a.m.–8 p.m. daily at all three hospitals — with a few unit-specific rhythms worth knowing.

Riverbank Medical Center

300 Monroe Avenue NW, Grand Rapids, MI

8 a.m.–8 p.m. daily; ICU quiet hours 2–4 p.m.; two visitors at a time at the bedside.

Children are welcome with an adult. During respiratory-illness season, units may post temporary masking or visitor limits at the door — the front desk at each hospital has today's status.

Parking & wayfinding

Park once, follow the codes

Every Riverbank building uses the same signage system: two-digit department codes on every sign, in every elevator, on your appointment reminder.

  • Medical Center

Monroe Avenue ramp ($4 flat for patients & visitors) — free valet at the main entrance, 7 a.m.–7 p.m.

  • North Hospital

Free surface parking at every entrance; stork spaces reserved at the Birth Center door.

  • East Hospital

Free surface parking steps from the door; accessible spaces at both entrances.

Wheelchairs wait at every entrance, and volunteers at the main desks will walk you to your department — just ask. Accessible parking sits within 100 feet of every public entrance.

Interpreters

Professional medical interpreters — including ASL — are available at every location and on every phone line, at no cost, around the clock. Tell any staff member the language you need; please don't rely on family members to interpret medical conversations.

Billing & financial assistance

Money stress is a health problem. We treat it like one.

One billing office for the whole system, plain-language bills, and a financial-assistance policy we publish instead of hiding: care first, paperwork second, dignity always.

Financial assistance discount tiers by household income
Household income What you pay
At or below 200% of the federal poverty level 100% — care is free
201–300% of the federal poverty level 75% discount
301–400% of the federal poverty level 50% discount
Above 400%, with high medical costs Case-by-case hardship review

The application is two pages, and a financial counselor will fill it out with you by phone. Approval covers the past six months of bills as well as future care. Call (616) 555-0132 weekdays 8–5 — or ask any front desk to page a counselor during a visit.

I got a bill I don't understand. Who do I call?

One number handles billing for every Riverbank location: (616) 555-0132, weekdays 8–5. A real person walks through the bill line by line — and if something's wrong, they fix it on the call rather than mailing you a new mystery.

Can I get a cost estimate before a procedure?

Yes — ask your care team or call the billing office with your procedure name and insurance details. Estimates arrive within two business days, in writing, in plain language.

What if I can't pay?

Tell us — that's the entire point of the financial assistance program. Emergency care is never delayed or denied over ability to pay, payment plans start at $25 a month with zero interest, and we never sell debt to collectors while an assistance application is open.

Do I need to sort insurance before an ER visit?

No. Registration happens at the bedside after you've been seen. Bring a card if you have one; if you don't, financial counselors will help you apply for coverage you may already qualify for.

Find care

Not sure where to start? That's what the guide is for.

Answer two questions and we'll point you to the right front door — ER, urgent care, a clinic, or a nurse on the phone — and explain why.
