Questions

Questions, answered plainly

The questions we hear most at the showroom and on the phone. If yours isn't here, call or email and a person will answer it.

Prices and quotes

Is the in-home measure really free?

Yes, within 45 km of the showroom. We laser-measure every room, take moisture readings, check flatness, bring samples, and send a written quote within two business days. Farther out, there is a $75 trip charge, credited back if you go ahead.

Why do you give a range instead of a price?

Because the floor under your floor decides the final number. A range from the estimate tool is honest; a firm price over the phone isn't. After the measure, your written quote is a fixed price that holds for 60 days unless the scope changes.

Why are material and labour on separate lines?

So you can compare quotes properly. Some installers quote a low per-square-foot price and leave out removal, levelling, transitions or trim. Ours lists all of it.

Is there a minimum job size?

Yes. Jobs under about 100 sq ft carry a $950 minimum, because a small room still takes a crew, a van and most of a day.

Do you price-match?

We don't match prices, but we will go through a competing quote with you line by line. Often the difference is something the other quote left out.

Moisture, subfloors and acclimation

Why do you test for moisture?

Moisture is the most common reason floors fail. Wood swells and cups, adhesives let go, and damp slabs grow mould under carpet and vinyl. A reading takes minutes and is written on your quote.

What is acclimation, and can we skip it?

It means letting the flooring sit in your home so it adjusts to your temperature and humidity. Hardwood needs 3 to 7 days, laminate about 48 hours, and most vinyl 24 to 48 hours. We follow the maker's instructions. Skipping it voids many warranties, so we won't.

Do I need to level my floor?

Floating floors need a flat base, usually within about 3/16 in. over 10 ft. Most homes need some patching. We check with a straightedge at the measure, and levelling is a separate line on the quote, never a surprise later.

Install day

Do we need to move furniture?

We move beds, sofas and tables. Please empty dressers, bookshelves and china cabinets, and take care of electronics and anything fragile. Pianos and safes need a specialist mover.

How long does an install take?

As a rough guide, 400 to 600 sq ft of vinyl, laminate or carpet takes one to two days. Hardwood takes two to four. Tile takes longer because thin-set and grout need curing time.

Can we stay home?

Usually, yes. We keep a path to the kitchen and bathroom where we can, and seal off work areas from dust. For refinishing and tile, you may want to be out for a day or two.

Do you remove and reinstall baseboards?

Our default is to leave baseboards in place and add new quarter-round. If you'd rather we remove and reinstall the baseboards, or install new ones, we quote it as its own line.

Warranty and care

What warranty do you give?

A 2-year workmanship warranty on every install, on top of the manufacturer's product warranty. If a seam opens, a transition lifts or carpet ripples because of our work, we come back and fix it at no charge.

How do we look after the new floor?

Felt pads on every furniture leg, a mat at each outside door, a damp (not wet) mop, and no steam cleaners on wood or laminate. You'll get a care sheet written for your floor on install day.
