What you'll find
On the benches
Our perennial yard runs about 600 varieties in a good spring, and every one carries a tag with its sun, height, bloom time and hardiness zone. In October the yard turns over to fall colour: mums, asters, sedum, ornamental grasses and kale. Annuals, hanging baskets and patio planters arrive with the spring opening on Saturday, April 17, 2027.

Fall colour, this week
Garden mums in 20 cm pots, asters, sedum, heuchera, ornamental kale and fall pansies. Plant them now and most perennials still have time to root before freeze-up.

02
Perennials by the bench
Benches are grouped by light: full sun, part shade and full shade. Look for the green NATIVE stake on plants that are native to Ontario.
-
03
Annuals and baskets (spring)
4-packs, 10 cm pots, hanging baskets and ready-made patio planters, most grown in our Greenhouse 1 from plugs in March.

Help on the floor
Bring a photo of the spot and a rough idea of how many hours of sun it gets. We would rather talk you out of the wrong plant than sell it to you twice.

Planting now (general advice)
Perennials planted by mid-October usually have time to settle in before the ground freezes. Water them in well and keep watering weekly until the ground is hard. Later than that, some plants are fine and some are better kept in a sheltered spot until spring: ask our staff which is which.
-
Zones on the tag
Every tag lists a hardiness zone. Peterborough is roughly zone 5a to 5b, but your yard may run colder or warmer. If a tag says zone 6, ask our staff before you buy it.
-
Mums are a gamble
Garden mums sold in fall are best treated as a long-lasting fall flower. Some come back the next year in a sheltered spot, many don't, which is why we don't guarantee them as perennials.
Hardiness zones: Most of the Peterborough area sits around Canadian hardiness zone 5a to 5b. Low spots, open fields and lakeside lots can run a half zone colder or warmer, so ask our staff about your street before you buy something borderline.
Questions
Asked at the till this week.
Is it too late to plant perennials in October?
Not usually. Most perennials planted by mid-October settle in fine if you water them until freeze-up. After that, ask our staff: the answer depends on the plant and how sheltered your spot is.
Do you have native plants?
Yes. Native perennials, grasses and shrubs carry a green NATIVE stake. The biggest selection arrives in spring.
Are annuals guaranteed?
No. Annuals live one season by design. Perennials are covered for one year from purchase when planted in the ground.
