What you'll find
On the benches
The nursery yard holds about 3 acres of trees and shrubs, from hydrangeas and lilacs to sugar maples, serviceberries and apple trees. Fall is one of the best times to plant them: cool air, warm soil and autumn rain. Our fall tree and shrub sale runs Saturday, October 24 and Sunday, October 25.

01
Flowering shrubs
Hydrangeas, lilacs, ninebark, spirea, viburnum and roses, each labelled with mature height and width so you can plan the spacing.
-
02
Evergreens
Cedars for hedging, spruce, pine, juniper and boxwood. Ask about winter wrap for the first two winters on exposed lots.
-
03
Shade and ornamental trees
Maples, oaks, serviceberry, redbud and Japanese tree lilac, from 1.8 m whips to wire-basket caliper trees.
-
04

Apples, pears, sour cherries, haskap and blueberries. Many need a second variety nearby for fruit: the tag tells you which.

Planting service (example prices)
Shrubs from $30 to $45 each, trees up to 2.4 m from $95 to $150, caliper trees from $220 to $350. That covers digging, amended backfill, a mulch ring, staking where it's needed and a two-year guarantee. Delivery is extra (from $65 in the city).
-
Before you dig
Book a free utility locate before any digging deeper than a garden bed, and plan for the mature size on the tag, not the size in the pot. Ask our staff to check the spacing against your photos.
-
Watering a new tree (general advice)
A slow, deep soak once or twice a week through the first season does more than a daily sprinkle. Keep going until the ground freezes. Ask our staff for the right amount for your tree and soil.
Hardiness zones: Most of the Peterborough area sits around Canadian hardiness zone 5a to 5b. Low spots, open fields and lakeside lots can run a half zone colder or warmer, so ask our staff about your street before you buy something borderline.
Questions
Asked at the till this week.
Is fall really a good time to plant trees?
For most trees and shrubs, yes. The soil stays warm after the air cools, so roots keep growing. Evergreens on windy, open lots are the exception: ask our staff about wrapping them.
Do you deliver big trees?
Yes. Delivery in Peterborough starts at $65, and our crew can plant it while they're there. Prices for planting are examples on this page; you get a firm number on the order.
How does the guarantee work on trees?
One year from purchase when planted in the ground, two years when our crew plants it. If it dies from normal causes, bring the tag and two photos and we replace it once.
