Bumper repair

Plastic repair when it's safe, a new bumper cover when it isn't, and sensors checked either way.

How we approach it

Most bumpers are a plastic cover over a foam or metal absorber. Scuffs and small tears in the cover can often be repaired and refinished, which saves money and time.

Many bumpers now hold parking sensors and radar. Even a light tap can knock them out of position. We check them on every bumper repair and calibrate them when the maker calls for it.

You might need this if

  • Scuffs, scrapes or paint transfer
  • A cracked or torn bumper cover
  • Broken clips, so the bumper sags or rattles
  • Parking sensor beeps or a radar warning
  • A bumper that sits crooked after a bump

How we do it

  1. Step 1: Check behind it

The cover comes off so we can inspect the absorber, reinforcement bar and brackets.

  2. Step 2: Repair or replace

Small tears get plastic welding. Bigger damage gets a new cover, with your say on the part type.

  3. Step 3: Refinish

A flexible paint system, so the finish moves with the plastic instead of cracking.

  4. Step 4: Sensors

Sensors are refitted and calibrated when the maker requires it.

Typical prices

Planning ranges in Canadian dollars, before GST. Your written estimate is the real number.

Bumper repair price ranges
Repair Typical range
Scuff or small crack repair Plastic repair and refinish $350 to $750
Bumper cover replacement New cover, painted to match $900 to $2,000
Sensor or radar calibration Added when the bumper holds them $300 to $700

About these numbers

Bumpers with radar behind them have strict rules about paint thickness and repairs. Some makers don't allow repairs in that area at all, so a new cover is the only option.

With insurance

A bumper repair from a collision can be claimed, but small scuffs often cost less than your deductible. We give you the number so you can decide.

Questions we hear

Should I repair or replace my bumper cover?

If the tear is small and away from sensors and mounting tabs, repair is usually fine. If it's badly cracked, has broken tabs or sits in front of radar, replacement is safer.

Is an aftermarket bumper cover OK?

Some fit well and some don't. If your policy gives you a choice, we explain the trade-off before ordering.
