Grey Heron Martial Arts · North Van

Adults & teens 14+

Begin badly. Begin anyway.

Most adults who walk in have never trained anything. The path is designed for exactly that person: Foundations first, then jiu-jitsu or kickboxing — with sparring optional at every single step.

The adult path

  1. Weeks 1–8

    1. Foundations

The shared grammar: footwork, pad work, breakfalls, first grappling positions. A rolling cycle — join any week, repeat it as long as you like.

  2. From month 2–3

    2. Choose your art

Add all-levels BJJ or kickboxing alongside Foundations — most people are ready earlier than they believe, and the coach will tell you plainly when you are.

  3. When it's yours

    3. Go deep

Advanced BJJ rounds, no-gi nights, early-morning kickboxing, Sunday open mat. Depth is the point; hurry is the enemy.

Adult Foundations

Foundations assumes nothing. Over a rolling eight-week cycle you learn to move, strike pads, fall safely, and grapple with control — the shared grammar of everything else we teach. Nobody spars, nobody keeps score, and the fittest person in the room is not the point of the room.

  • Footwork, stance, and pad-work fundamentals
  • Breakfalls and first grappling positions
  • A rolling cycle — join any week
  • Zero sparring at this level, ever

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

Our BJJ program runs gi and no-gi through the week: technique and positional drilling for everyone, live rolling split by experience so white belts are never someone's warm-up. Brand new to grappling? The all-levels gi classes welcome first-timers, but Foundations is the smoother on-ramp — say so on your trial and we'll route you right.

  • Technique + positional sparring every class
  • Live rolls split by experience level
  • Gi on Mon/Wed/Fri, no-gi on Thu/Sat
  • Belt promotions on the mat, never invoiced

Kickboxing

Fifty-five minutes of pad rounds, bag work, and honest conditioning, built on the same technical footwork as our karate program. The all-levels classes are strictly no-head-contact: you'll hit things hard and get fit doing it, and your face will look exactly the same at your desk on Monday.

  • Pad and heavy-bag rounds with rotating partners
  • Footwork and defence you can actually use
  • Conditioning finishers — scaled, never punitive
  • No head-contact sparring in all-levels classes

Open Mat

Open Mat is the quietest ninety minutes of the week: members drilling what they learned, easy rounds by agreement, and a coach on the mat for questions. Included in every adult membership; not bookable as a trial — come to a class first so we can meet you properly.

  • Unstructured drilling and easy rounds
  • A coach on the mat the whole time
  • Included with every adult membership

The contact policy, in plain words

Nobody spars by default

  • Foundations: zero sparring, by design, forever. It's a technique room.
  • Kickboxing: all-levels classes are pads and bags only — no head-contact sparring exists at this level.
  • BJJ: live rolls are split by experience and always by agreement. White belts roll with people who know how to keep them safe.
  • Everywhere: tapping is information, not defeat — and any student can sit out any round without explaining themselves.

The only offer we run

The hardest class is the one you book.

Foundations if you're new, all-levels BJJ or kickboxing if you've trained before — your first class is free either way, and the coach will route you honestly after it.
