Kids · ages 4–13
Kids who can hold still — then move
Three age bands, because a six-year-old and a twelve-year-old need different rooms. What they share: two arts, patient coaches, and a parent bench beside the mat.
Ages 4–6 · 30 minutes · max 10 kids
Little Herons
Little Herons is a movement class wearing a tiny gi. We work on balance beams and animal walks, taking turns, standing still for three whole breaths, and the first blocks and stances of karate — taught as games, never drills. Two coaches, ten kids, and a parent bench right beside the mat.
- Two coaches for every ten kids
- Balance, coordination, and listening games
- First karate stances and blocks, taught playfully
- Bowing in and out — manners as part of the fun

Young Herons
Young Herons is where technique starts to matter. Kids learn full karate combinations and forms, begin safe, structured grappling from the knees, and earn stripes for effort and composure — not just attendance. The tone stays warm; the standards quietly rise.
- Karate strikes, blocks, and first full forms
- Grappling from the knees — controlled and coached
- Stripe goals for focus, effort, and kindness
- Partner drills that teach control, not aggression

Juniors
Juniors train a genuine two-discipline curriculum: karate for striking structure and posture, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for problem-solving on the ground. Light-contact sparring is introduced only after six months, always padded, always opt-in, and always refereed by a coach. This is the age where discipline becomes their own, not their parents'.
- Full karate forms and pad work
- BJJ positions, escapes, and live rounds from the knees
- Opt-in, padded light-contact sparring after 6 months
- Leadership roles — seniors help warm up the room

What we promise the bench
You can always see the mat
The parent bench runs the length of the River Mat. Stay for every class, every time — no drop-off-only policies, no mirrored glass.
Contact is earned, padded, and opt-in
No head contact at any kids level. Grappling starts from the knees. Sparring exists only in Juniors — after six months, with gear, by choice, refereed by a coach.
Belts are earned, never invoiced
Gradings happen in regular class time each season and cost $0 — the belt is included. Progress here is measured in composure, not receipts.
Not sure which band fits a boundary-age kid? Book the trial in either — the coach will make the call with you after class. More in the FAQ.
The only offer we run
Their first class is free — and you watch the whole thing.
Book a trial in your child's age band. We lend the uniform, you take the bench, and afterwards the coach gives you an honest read on fit — even if the honest read is 'try soccer first.'
