Lock rekeying

Rekeying: same locks, brand-new keys

Rekeying swaps the pins inside your locks so the old keys stop working. You keep the hardware you like and pay far less than new locks. Most homes are done in under an hour.

If your locks are too worn to rekey, we'll say so and quote a replacement. Most aren't, and rekeying is the cheaper job. We don't upsell hardware you don't need.

how the job goes

Four steps, and the price comes first

  1. step 01

    Count the cylinders

A deadbolt and a knob on one door is two cylinders. Tell us the count and you'll hear the exact price on the phone.

  2. step 02

    Repin at your door

The tech takes each cylinder apart, swaps the pins, and keys every door alike unless you ask otherwise.

  3. step 03

    Every key in every door

Four new keys, each tried in each lock while you watch. Extra keys are $6 each.

  4. step 04

    Old pins in a bag

You get the old pins back, so you know the change really happened.

Rekey after closing on a house
“Five cylinders rekeyed to one key. The math on the invoice matched the price book on their site line for line: $125 for the visit and first two, $24 each after. Handed me the old pins in a little bag.”

Rekey after a lost keyring
“As a woman alone in the house I appreciated the ID check going both ways. He showed me his licence card before I'd even asked, and told me to look up the number while he set up.”

Questions about lock rekeying

Should I rekey or replace?

Rekey when the locks work well and you just need new keys. Replace when a lock is worn, broken, or too weak for the door. A rekey visit starts at $125 for two cylinders; a new Grade 2 deadbolt starts at $165.

Can every door use the same key?

Yes, if the locks share a keyway, which most home locks do. If one lock is a different brand, we can often swap its cylinder. You'll hear that price before we start.

How long does a rekey take?

About 10 minutes per cylinder. A typical three-door home is done in under an hour.
