Pruning & trimming

Lighter, safer crowns that let the sun in and keep limbs off the roof. Done to standard, never topped.

How we do it

Good pruning removes the right branches: dead wood, crossing limbs, and anything rubbing the roof or hanging over the driveway. It makes a tree safer in wind and healthier for years.

Bad pruning (topping, or hacking a tree back to stubs) makes a tree weaker and more dangerous. We don't do it, even when asked. We also never wear climbing spikes on a tree we are keeping, because every spike hole is a wound.

Your arborist will walk the tree with you, mark what comes off, and explain why. Most trees do best with a visit every three to five years.

What it costs

Typical ranges in our area. Your firm price comes after the on-site look, in writing.

Pruning & trimming price ranges in US dollars
Job Typical range
Small tree or ornamental Dogwoods, redbuds, Japanese maples $250 to $450
Medium shade tree, clean and thin Deadwood out, crown thinned for wind $450 to $950
Large shade tree, full crown work Big oaks and maples, climber plus ground crew $950 to $1,900
Roof and house clearance only Limbs cut back off the roof and siding $300 to $700
Crown raise over a drive or lawn Low limbs lifted for clearance $250 to $600

Straight talk

We don't remove more than about a quarter of a healthy tree's live crown in one visit. If a quote elsewhere is half the price, ask how much of the tree is coming off.

"They walked me around the tree and showed me every branch that was coming off before they started. No topping, no stubs. It looks like a tree, just a healthier one."
