Ballet

The base under every other style: posture, balance, turns and musicality, taught in small graded levels.

Ages 6 to 17 · from $74 a month

About Ballet

Good for

  • Dancers who want strong technique for every style
  • Kids who like focus and structure
  • Future competition team dancers (ballet is required for the team)

Ballet is where most of our dancers build their strength. It is slow on purpose. A good plié today is a clean jump next year and a safe landing the year after.

Classes stay small (12 dancers at most) so the teacher can correct every dancer, every class, by name. Dancers move up a level when they are ready, not because a birthday came around.

6 classes a week across 5 days. See them

Levels

Five, six, seven, eight: one class, start to finish

  1. Count 5: Barre

Warm the feet, ankles and back with pliés, tendus and rises.

  2. Count 6: Centre

The same steps without holding on, which is where balance is built.

  3. Count 7: Across the floor

Chassés, turns and jumps travelling in small groups.

  4. Count 8: Révérence

A bow to the teacher and the pianist track, and a calm finish.

Who teaches ballet

  • Marisol Vega

    Founder and artistic director

Marisol trained in classical ballet for fifteen years and danced in touring musical theatre before she opened Count Eight in a borrowed church hall. She teaches every ballet level and still sets the opening number of the June show.

"The fee page is the reason we picked Count Eight. We knew the costume and recital costs in September, not in May."

Ballet: questions

When does my dancer go on pointe?

When her teacher and our readiness check say her feet, ankles and core are ready. That is usually after at least three years of regular ballet and around age 11 or 12, but we go by readiness, never by age or by how much a dancer wants it.

Do you follow an exam syllabus?

We teach graded levels with clear goals for each one. Exams are not required. Dancers get a written progress note in January and June instead.

Can boys take ballet?

Yes, and they do. The dress code has a t-shirt and shorts option for anyone who wants it.
