Getting started

4 answers in this section.

How does matching work?

Three minutes of intake — what's bringing you in, scheduling, identity preferences, budget. Within 24 hours we send you a licensed therapist with same-week availability. If the match isn't right, switching is two taps.

How long until my first session?

Median is under 48 hours from completing intake. We staff to keep openings, not waitlists.

Do I need a referral?

Not for therapy. For psychiatry — we accept self-referrals; some plans require a primary-care referral, which we can help facilitate.

What if the first therapist isn't right?

Switching is two taps in the app. We hold your insurance and intake details so you don't redo paperwork. Most members who switch find the right match the second try.

Insurance + cost

4 answers in this section.

How does the insurance check work?

During signup we run real-time eligibility through our clearinghouse. Inside 90 seconds you know exactly what your copay or coinsurance will be — no surprises.

What if I don't have coverage?

Self-pay starts at $69 per week (4 sessions/month). Sliding-scale rates from $35 are available for income-qualifying members.

Are sessions HSA/FSA-eligible?

Yes — therapy with licensed providers qualifies as a medical expense. We accept HSA/FSA cards and provide an annual summary every January for tax filing.

What about cancellations?

More than 24 hours' notice — no charge. Less than 24 hours — full session fee, unless it's a genuine emergency. We're flexible about emergencies.

How therapy works at Sanctum

4 answers in this section.

Video, voice, or text?

All three. Most members have a weekly 50-minute video session plus unlimited messaging in the app. Some prefer voice-only sessions; some do messaging-only when they're traveling.

How often will I meet with my therapist?

Most members start weekly for the first 6–8 sessions, then move to biweekly. Some stay weekly indefinitely; others do monthly maintenance. Your therapist will discuss the cadence.

Will I need medication?

Most therapy clients aren't on meds. About 25% of members see one of our 90 psychiatrists alongside therapy — usually because the symptoms are severe enough that meds will let therapy work better.

Is this confidential?

Yes. HIPAA-compliant from end to end. Records release only with your written consent. The exceptions are imminent harm, suspected abuse of a minor, or a court subpoena — and your therapist will explain those in session 1.

About Sanctum

4 answers in this section.

Who runs Sanctum?

We're a clinician-led therapy platform — founded in 2018 by three psychologists who'd worked in larger systems and wanted to build something that put therapists and clients first.

Are your therapists employees or contractors?

All Sanctum therapists are 1099 contractors with significantly above-market rates, paid CE time, structured supervision, and no required minimums. We protect their caseloads so they don't burn out.

Do you do research?

We participate in three outcome-tracking studies and publish an annual outcomes report every January. Our DBT and perinatal programs feed into university research collaborations.

I'm in crisis right now — what do I do?

Sanctum isn't a crisis service. If you're in distress, call or text 988 in the US. For emergencies, 911 or your nearest ER. We can absolutely see you for ongoing care once you're safe.
