Done

Preventive grub control applied

  • No damage from last year found
  • Mowed down flowering clover along the back first
  • Needs about half an inch of water in the next 2 days

Applied: preventive granular grub product at the label rate

Safe to walk on: once it has been watered in and the grass is dry

How we do it

White grubs are beetle larvae that feed on grass roots from late July into September. The damage looks like drought until you can roll the turf back like a carpet. Skunks and raccoons digging at night are another sign. Prevention is cheaper and gentler than a rescue, so we apply a preventive product once in June, before the eggs hatch.

When: One application between late May and early July.

On every visit

  1. Check for last year's damage and for animal digging
  2. Mow down or skip flowering clover first, so we are not treating plants bees are visiting
  3. Apply a preventive granular product at the label rate
  4. Ask for about half an inch of rain or irrigation to water it in
  5. If damage shows up anyway, we come back and treat it at no charge

Plain about products

What goes on your lawn

A preventive grub product applied as a granule, typically chlorantraniliprole, chosen because it works at low rates and is one of the gentler grub products available. If an active infestation needs a curative product, we tell you which one and why before we apply it.

Kids and pets

When the lawn is ready again

Keep pets and kids off until the product has been watered in and the grass is dry. Follow the label, and check your visit note for the all-clear time.

Book this when

  • Brown patches showed up in August and did not green up with rain
  • Turf lifts like a loose rug in the damaged spots
  • Skunks, raccoons or birds have been tearing up the lawn
  • Neighbors on your street had grub damage last year

Questions about grub control

How do I know if I have grubs?

Pull back a square foot of turf at the edge of a brown patch. More than five to ten C-shaped white grubs in that square usually means treatment is worth it. We check for free during any visit.

Do I need grub control every year?

Not always. If your lawn and your street have no history of damage, you can skip a year and watch. Lawns with past damage or heavy beetle activity do better with yearly prevention.
