A Writer's Garden Studio

The brief was a commute: long enough to change gears, short enough in the rain. The studio had to hold a desk, a daybed and a wall of books; the garden had to be beautiful from the desk chair specifically — the client would see it sitting down, through glass, most of the year.

The studio sits at the garden's far corner, clad in vertical cedar that is already silvering toward the fence line. Full-height glazing faces back at the house across a gravel court, so the walk to work has a destination in view the whole way.

Because the primary viewpoint is seated and interior, the planting is composed like a picture: white rendered raised planters carry the mid-ground, an apple and a river birch frame the glass, and the palette peaks in autumn — the writing season, we were told.

Twelve weeks including the structure. Screw-pile foundations kept excavation away from the neighbour's mature beech roots; the cedar rainscreen went on over a fully insulated, wired shell — the studio runs warm at minus fifteen.

The gravel court is the quiet hero: a compacted porous base that took the whole build's foot traffic and still drains like a sieve.
