How rooftop solar actually works

Five steps, no hand-waving. If a salesperson has ever made this sound complicated, that was the point — complicated things are easier to overprice.

    Panels make DC power from light

    Photons knock electrons loose in the silicon — no moving parts, no heat required. Cold, bright winter days are actually efficient ones.

  2. 02

    The inverter makes it house-ready

    An inverter (one big one, or a micro under each panel) converts DC to the AC your home runs on. It's the hardest-working component — and the one warranty worth reading.

  3. 03

    Your home uses solar first

    Appliances draw from the roof before the grid. Whatever you don't use flows backward through the meter.

    The grid is your battery (mostly)

    Exported energy earns credits under net metering; you spend them at night and in winter. Credits are often worth a bit less than retail — our sizing accounts for that instead of ignoring it.

    Monitoring keeps it honest

    Panel-level monitoring shows exactly what the roof produced — the same numbers we publish on our installs page, actual vs. estimate.

The winter question, answered honestly

Winter output is lower. The system is designed knowing that.

Cold air actually helps panel efficiency — silicon prefers a bright January morning to a 95° July afternoon. What winter takes away is hours: December days are short, and snow can blank a roof for a day or two after a storm. A December might produce a third of a June.

That's why we size on annual production, not a sunny-day brochure number: summer surpluses become credits, and the credits carry you through the dark months. The month-by-month curve is in every quote before you sign, not discovered in January.

Please don't rake snow off panels with metal tools — they shed on their own, and scratched glass isn't covered by anyone's warranty.

Batteries and monitoring

Do you need a battery?

Only if backup power matters to you. Net metering already banks your surplus, so around here a battery usually lengthens payback rather than shortening it. It's an insurance purchase, not an investment — we'll quote one honestly and say exactly that in the quote.

Monitoring keeps everyone honest

Panel-level monitoring shows what the roof produced, down to the panel, on your phone. It's the same data we publish on our installs page — actual versus estimate — because a production model you can't check is just a promise with a chart on it.
