Trade-in valuation

We’ll show our math

KBB Trade-In Average + condition adjustments + auction value comparison. We’ll buy your vehicle even if you’re not buying from us. ~30% of trades go to other dealers + private buyers.

What affects your trade value

The variables we consider

Year, make, model, trim
Different makes hold value differently. Toyotas + Hondas + Mazdas hold value best. Domestic brands depreciate faster. Trim level matters — Premium trims trade higher than base.
Mileage
Mileage vs. expected (12k/year benchmark). Below-average mileage adds value; above-average reduces. Houston commutes mean many local trades have higher-than-average miles — we factor this in.
Condition
Excellent, Good, Fair, Poor. Most trades are ‘Good’ condition. Excellent = like-new + maintenance records + minor wear. Fair = visible wear, minor damage, some maintenance needed.
Service history
Documented service history adds value (typically $300-$1,500). Honda/Toyota/Mazda service records especially valuable. Bring service records to the appraisal.
Accident + damage history
Carfax/AutoCheck-reported accidents reduce value 10-25% depending on severity. Frame damage or salvage titles significantly reduce or eliminate trade value.
Local market demand
Houston market drives heavy demand for trucks + SUVs (especially Tundras, F-150s, Tacomas). Higher local demand = higher trade values. Sedans + economy cars typically trade lower.
Pricing transparency

How we compute trade value

KBB Trade-In + adjustments
Start with KBB Trade-In Average. Adjust for: VIN-specific market data, regional demand, condition specifics, service history, optional equipment. Final number typically within 5% of KBB.
Auction value floor
If we won’t retail your vehicle, we’ll send it to auction. Trade value reflects what we expect at auction. Auction values published — we won’t hide our pricing logic.
Reconditioning costs
Vehicles need reconditioning before retail (detail, mechanical, tires if needed). Average $400-$1,200 per vehicle. We deduct expected reconditioning from trade value upfront.
Profit margin
Yes, we make money on trades — typically $500-$2,000 retail margin per vehicle. Less than competitors. We’re transparent: trade-in margin funds our $0 doc fee + lower new-car prices.
Tax savings on trade
Texas: trade-in value DEDUCTED from new purchase before sales tax. Trade $20k vehicle, buy $40k vehicle: only pay sales tax on $20k difference. Saves $1,500+ on average trade.
Above + below market
Sometimes we offer above-KBB if we have a buyer waiting. Sometimes below-KBB if vehicle has issues we’ll need to fix. We’ll explain why for either direction.
High-value trades

Vehicles in highest demand at Atlantic

Honda CR-V (any year, any trim)
Highest-demand vehicle in Houston market. We can retail any reasonable CR-V. Trade values 10-15% above competing dealers typical.
Toyota Tacoma (any year)
Texas pickup demand is real. Tacomas hold value better than any other midsize pickup. We sell every Tacoma we get within 30 days typical.
Toyota 4Runner (any year)
Lifetime collectors’ vehicle in Texas. 4Runners trade 5-15% above national average due to local demand. We retail every 4Runner that comes through.
Honda Pilot (recent years)
Family-vehicle staple. We sell Pilots quickly. Trade values competitive with national best.
Mazda CX-5 (3-5 years old)
Mazda demand grows in Houston market. CX-5 in 3-5 year sweet spot trades well. We retail rather than auction.
Toyota Sienna minivan
Houston families love Siennas. We retail every Sienna we get. Trade values 10%+ above competing dealers.
Lower-value trades

When we'll send to auction (lower trade)

European luxury
BMW, Mercedes, Audi, Volvo. We don’t retail high-mileage Europeans (service costs scare buyers). We’ll buy at auction values, which are typically 15-25% below KBB.
Domestic sedans (older)
Older Ford/Chevy/Dodge sedans. Limited Houston demand. We’ll buy at auction values. Trades for parts vehicles common.
Salvage + branded titles
Salvage, flood, lemon-buyback titles. We won’t retail these vehicles. Auction or wholesale-only buy, significantly reduced trade value.
High-mileage older vehicles
Vehicles with 200k+ miles + 12+ years old. Reconditioning costs typically exceed retail margin. Trade value reflects auction wholesale + parts value.
Significant accident damage
Vehicles with frame damage or major collision history. Hard to retail. Trade values 25-40% below KBB for visible accident damage.
Mechanical issues
Transmission problems, engine issues, electrical gremlins. We’ll buy at reduced trade value. Sometimes we recommend keeping + selling private if mechanical issue is fixable.

Trade-in questions

What customers ask

  • Private sale typically nets 10-20% more than trade-in. Trade-in advantages: convenience, sales tax savings, no test drives with strangers, no lien questions. Private sale advantages: more money, control, can take time. We’ll show the math both ways.
