About Evenkeel
A physician-led practice for people who are tired of being told to just eat less.
Why we started Evenkeel
Dr. Maya Okafor spent nine years in hospital internal medicine. Again and again, she met patients with diabetes, sleep apnea or painful joints who had been told the same thing for decades: eat less, move more, try harder. Most of them had tried very hard. Nobody had looked at their hormones, their medicines, their sleep or their lives.
In 2017 she opened a small practice in Raleigh to do it differently. Longer first visits. Lab work before decisions. Dietitians who plan around real kitchens. And a rule that still guides every visit: no judgment, ever.
Today Evenkeel has two clinics, a team of physicians, nurse practitioners, a physician assistant and dietitians, and patients from across the Triangle. The rule has not changed.
Our values
Patients first is more than a promise here.
-
No judgment, as a clinical standard
Weight is shaped by genes, hormones, sleep, stress, medicines and money. We treat it like any other health condition: with curiosity, evidence and respect.
-
Medicine you can understand
Every lab, every medication and every side effect is explained in plain words before you decide anything. You can always ask why.
-
Honest about cost
Program fees are published as ranges. Medication cost is separate, and we help you check coverage before you start, not after.
-
In it for the long run
Weight is a long-term condition. We plan for plateaus, hard months and maintenance from the first visit, and you can always come back.
What we will never do
Medical weight care has a lot of noise around it. These are the lines we do not cross, written down so you can hold us to them.
- Sell shakes, supplements or meal kits
- Prescribe compounded or unapproved medications
- Weigh you anywhere but a private room, and only if you agree
- Promise a number on the scale by a date
- Lock you into a long contract
- Talk about your body with blame

How we hold ourselves accountable
We do not publish success rates or average pounds lost. Bodies are too different, and those numbers are easy to bend. Instead, after every visit, we ask you two questions.
- Did you feel respected today? If the answer is ever no, the medical director calls you herself.
- Do you understand your plan?If not, we explain it again, in writing, before you leave.
Come and meet us.
Your first visit is about an hour, with time for every question. Send a request and a coordinator will call you within one business day.
