Body composition testing

The scale alone tells you very little. A short, private scan estimates muscle, body fat and water, so your plan can protect what matters.

Overview

A number on a scale cannot tell muscle from fat. This scan can estimate both, privately, in about two minutes.

We use a medical-grade bioelectrical impedance (BIA) analyzer. You stand barefoot on the platform and hold two hand grips. A tiny, painless electrical signal estimates how much of your body is muscle, fat and water.

The scan happens in a private room with one staff member. You can choose not to look at the screen. Your results are for you and your care team only.

We repeat the scan every four to eight weeks, at the same time of day, so changes are easier to read.

Who it fits

This may be a good fit if:

  • You are starting a program and want a baseline beyond weight
  • You take a GLP-1 medication and want to watch your muscle mass
  • You are strength training and want to see changes the scale misses

This scan is not for you if

  • You have a pacemaker, defibrillator or other implanted electronic device
  • You are pregnant
  • You cannot stand still for about two minutes (ask us about other options)

What happens

  1. Step 1: Prepare

Try not to eat a large meal or exercise hard for 2 hours before. Empty your bladder first.

  2. Step 2: Scan

Shoes and socks off, stand on the platform, hold the grips. About two minutes.

  3. Step 3: Review

Your clinician or dietitian explains the results in plain words, or saves them for your next visit if you prefer.

What the scan can and cannot tell you

BIA results are estimates. Hydration, a recent meal or a hard workout can shift them a little, which is why we look at trends over months, not one reading.

The scan does not diagnose anything. It is one piece of information your care team reads alongside your labs and how you feel.

Questions

Do I have to see my numbers?

No. Just tell the staff member. We can turn the screen away and share only what you want to know, when you want to know it.

Does it hurt?

No. You will not feel the signal at all. It is the same kind of scan used in many clinics and gyms, with medical-grade equipment.
