Sightline Optometry

Urgent visit · $95 · same or next day

Red, sore or scratched eye? We hold room for it every day.

Optometrists are trained to treat many eye problems that people take to a walk-in clinic or the ER. Call in the morning and you will usually be seen that day.

First, a quick check

Is it urgent, or an emergency?

Most red or sore eyes are urgent, not emergencies, and we can see them here. The signs in this box are different. They need a phone call now, or the hospital after hours.

Eye emergency? Do not book online

  • Sudden vision loss, or a grey curtain or shadow moving across your vision, in one eye or both
  • A sudden shower of new floaters, flashes of light, or both
  • An eye injury, a chemical splash, or something stuck in the eye
  • Severe eye pain with headache, nausea, or halos around lights
  • Double vision that started suddenly

These can be signs of a retinal detachment, angle-closure glaucoma, or another problem where hours matter. During clinic hours, call us and say the word “urgent.” We hold room in every day’s schedule. After hours, go straight to the nearest emergency department. Do not book online and wait.

What we see same-day

The eye problems that shouldn’t wait a week.

  • Red or pink eye

Redness, discharge, crusty lashes, or one eye that suddenly looks angry.

  • Something in the eye

Dust, metal or wood fragments, or a gritty feeling that won’t blink away.

  • A scratched eye

A fingernail, a branch or a makeup brush. Scratches need checking and often drops.

  • Contact lens pain

A red or sore eye while wearing contacts. Take the lens out and bring the case.

  • Lid bumps + swelling

Styes, swollen lids and tender bumps along the lash line.

  • Sudden allergy flare

Itchy, puffy, watering eyes that over-the-counter drops aren’t settling.

How an urgent visit works

Seen, treated, and checked on afterwards.

  1. Call, or book today or tomorrow online

Calling is fastest. Say the word “urgent” and the front desk will find you a held spot, usually the same day.

  2. A focused exam at the slit lamp

The doctor looks at the front of your eye under magnification, checks your vision and pressure, and stains the surface if a scratch is likely.

  3. A plan you can follow

Optometrists in Ontario can prescribe many eye drops. You leave knowing what to use, what to watch for, and when to come back.

  4. Follow-up or referral

We call to check how it’s settling. If you need an eye surgeon or hospital care, we arrange the referral and send our findings.

Before you come in

Four things that help.

  • Don’t rub the eye, even if it itches.
  • Take out your contact lenses and bring them with the case.
  • Bring your glasses so you can see your way home.
  • Bring a list of any drops or medicines you’ve already tried.

The fee

$95

An urgent visit is $95. OHIP covers many urgent eye visits, and workplace plans often cover the rest. The front desk checks what applies before you are seen, so there are no surprises.
