Likely cause: A heating element on electric dryers, an igniter or gas valve coils on gas dryers, or a blown thermal fuse.

Repair it, or replace it?
A dryer usually lasts 10 to 13 years. Here's how we call it, and we say it out loud even when the answer costs us the job.
Repair it when
- Almost always. Dryers are simple machines and most parts are affordable
- The drum and cabinet are solid with no rust
- It matches a washer you're keeping
Replace it when
- The drum is rusted through or the cabinet is damaged
- A board repair would cost more than half the price of a new dryer
- It's over 15 years old and the motor has failed
Dryers are the appliance we most often tell people to keep. A $200 repair on a 10-year-old dryer usually buys years of use.
Try these before you book
They take five minutes and sometimes save you the visit. If none of them help, we'll take it from there.
- 1 Clean the lint screen, then shine a flashlight into the slot below it.
- 2 Go outside while it runs. You should feel strong, warm air at the vent hood.
- 3 Electric dryers use a double breaker. If half has tripped, it runs but won't heat.
- 4 On a gas dryer, check that the gas valve behind it is open.
If you smell gas, leave the house and call your gas utility from outside. If it smells like burning, unplug it and don't use it until we've checked it.

Do you clean dryer vents?
We clear the lint path inside the dryer and the first section of the vent during any dryer repair. Long or rooftop vent runs need a vent cleaning company, and we can point you to one.
Do you work on gas dryers?
Yes. We repair gas dryers and leak-test every gas fitting we touch. We don't run new gas lines. That's a job for a licensed plumber or gas fitter.
