Likely cause: A burnt-out bake element on electric ovens. On gas ovens, a weak igniter that glows but never opens the gas valve.

Repair it, or replace it?
A oven or range usually lasts 13 to 15 years. Here's how we call it, and we say it out loud even when the answer costs us the job.
Repair it when
- Almost always for elements, igniters and sensors
- It's a pro-style or high-end range
- It's a wall oven that would need cabinet work to replace
Replace it when
- The control board and touch panel have both failed on a basic range over 12 years old
- The glass top is cracked on a range that cost under $800
- Rust has reached the oven cavity or the burner box
A new glass top on a basic range can cost almost as much as the range. If yours is past 10 years, we'll tell you to replace it.
Try these before you book
They take five minutes and sometimes save you the visit. If none of them help, we'll take it from there.
- 1 Check the breaker. Electric ranges use a double breaker that can half-trip.
- 2 On a gas range, make sure each burner cap sits flat and dry.
- 3 Check whether the oven is set to a lock or Sabbath mode.
- 4 Look at the bake element. A blister or a break means it's done.
If you smell gas, don't switch anything on or off. Leave the house and call your gas utility from outside. Then call us.

Do you work on gas ranges?
Yes. We repair gas ovens, ranges and cooktops and leak-test every fitting we touch. We don't install or move gas lines.
Can you fix a cracked glass cooktop?
We can replace the glass top, but a crack can't be repaired. Glass tops are pricey, so we quote it in writing and tell you if a new range makes more sense.
