Washer repair

Won't drain, won't spin, walks across the floor or stops with a code. Top-loaders and front-loaders, fixed in your laundry room.

What it's doing, and why

Washers break in a handful of predictable ways: pumps, switches, belts, door locks and valves. Our laundry technician carries those parts on the van. We also tell you when a washer has reached the end, which usually means worn tub bearings on a front-loader.

Typical visit

  • What you see

Won't drain or still full of water

Likely cause: Something caught in the drain pump (socks, coins, hair ties) or a pump that has worn out.

  • What you see

    Won't spin or agitate

Likely cause: A lid switch or door lock, a worn belt or coupler, or a motor control fault.

  • What you see

Loud banging on the spin cycle

Likely cause: Worn shock absorbers or suspension rods. If it roars like a jet engine, it's often the tub bearings.

  • What you see

    Leaking during the wash

Likely cause: A torn door boot on a front-loader, a loose hose, or a cracked pump housing.

  • What you see

    Door won't unlock

Likely cause: A failed door lock, or a drain problem the washer is protecting you from.

  • What you see

    Error code on the display

Likely cause: Tell us the code when you book. It narrows down the parts we bring.

Repair it, or replace it?

A washer usually lasts 10 to 14 years. Here's how we call it, and we say it out loud even when the answer costs us the job.

Repair it when

  • The fix is a pump, switch, belt, lock or valve
  • It's a quality machine under 8 years old
  • It's half of a stacked pair you want to keep

Replace it when

  • Tub bearings are gone on a front-loader over 7 years old
  • The outer tub is cracked
  • The control board and the motor have both failed
Bearing jobs on front-loaders take most of a day and often cost $600 or more. On a 9-year-old machine, we'll usually tell you to buy a new washer instead.

Try these before you book

They take five minutes and sometimes save you the visit. If none of them help, we'll take it from there.

  1. 1 Clean the drain pump filter. Most front-loaders hide it behind a small door at the bottom front.
  2. 2 Check that both water taps behind the washer are fully open.
  3. 3 Rebalance the load. One heavy, wet towel can stop a spin.
  4. 4 Unplug it for one full minute to reset the controls.

If it's leaking, turn off both taps behind the washer and don't run another load until we've looked at it.

Washer questions

Should I run it again to see what happens?

Not if it's leaking or smells hot. Turn it off, close the water taps, and book. Running a washer with a failing pump or bearing can turn a $200 fix into a $600 one.

Do you fix stacked and all-in-one units?

Yes. They take a little longer to open up, and that's already built into our prices.

Can you move the washer to get behind it?

Yes. We move it, protect your floor, and put it back level. If it's on a pedestal or in a tight closet, mention it when you book.
