How it works

USCIS recommends filing a DACA renewal 120 to 150 days before your current grant expires. Filing in that window lowers the risk of a gap in your work permit. We track your dates and remind you before the window opens.

Court cases have changed DACA several times. For years, USCIS has not been able to approve most first-time requests, while renewals have continued. Because the rules can shift, we check the current status before every filing and explain it in plain words, in English or Spanish.

Every renewal includes a screening for other options. Some DACA recipients have a path to a green card through a U.S. citizen spouse, parent or adult child, especially if they entered lawfully or once traveled on advance parole. We look, every time.

The forms, in plain words

  • I-821D Consideration of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals
  • I-765 Work permit request
  • I-765WS Work permit worksheet
  • I-131 Advance parole travel document

The steps, and who does what

Every step has an owner. You always know whether we are waiting on you, on us, or on the government.

  1. Our team

Step 1: Date check and reminder

We note your expiration date and text you 150 days before it.

  2. Our team

Step 2: Changes since last time

New addresses, any arrests or charges, any travel. We review them before filing.

  3. Our team

    Step 3: File the renewal

Renewal forms, work permit request and worksheet, filed inside the recommended window.

  4. USCIS

    Step 4: Biometrics

Fingerprints and photos, if USCIS asks for them again.

  5. USCIS

    Step 5: Decision

A new grant and work permit by mail. We set the next reminder the same day.

  6. Our team

    Step 6: Options screening

A short written note on whether any other path, like a family petition, may be open to you.

How long it takes

Renewal decisions often take several months.

That is why the 120 to 150 day window matters. Times change, and we check them before every filing. We never promise a date.

Why cases wait

What to gather

  • Your current work permit, front and back
  • Your last DACA approval notice
  • Court records for any arrest or charge since your last renewal
  • Any new passport or ID
  • Dates of any travel outside the U.S.

Do not have everything? That is normal. Luis, our senior paralegal, helps you find or replace missing records.

Tell us early about

  • Filing after your grant expires
  • A new arrest or charge since your last renewal
  • Travel outside the U.S. without an approved advance parole document
  • Anyone who is not a lawyer offering to "fix" your status

None of these means your case is over. They mean it needs a plan before anything is filed.

Example outcome

DACA renewal

Approved, with a gap

Situation: A client who came to us after his DACA grant had already expired.

What happened: We filed that week. The renewal was approved, but his work permit lapsed for several weeks first. It is the reason we now text every client 150 days out.

Example outcomes describe past matters in general terms, with details changed to protect privacy. Every case is different. They are not a promise or prediction of your result.

Questions about DACA renewals

Is USCIS still accepting DACA renewals?

Renewals have continued through the court cases so far, but DACA's rules have changed before and may again. We confirm the current status on the day we prepare your filing, and we will tell you plainly if anything has changed.

Can I travel outside the U.S. with DACA?

Only with advance parole approved before you leave, and only for reasons USCIS accepts, such as school, work or family emergencies. Travel can carry risk depending on your history, so talk to us first.

Can I apply for DACA for the first time?

Court orders have blocked approval of most first-time requests for years. We can tell you whether filing makes sense today, what it would and would not do, and whether another path fits you better.
