Reels Are the Priority in 2026

Instagram’s algorithm explicitly favors Reels over static posts and carousels. Reels get 3–5x more reach organically. Every account should publish 3–5 Reels per week minimum. Format: 9–30 seconds, hook in first 2 seconds, clear value, trending audio (when relevant), captions burned in. Don’t repost TikToks with TikTok watermarks — Instagram actively downranks them.

Carousels for Saves and Shares

Stories are for existing followers — low reach for non-followers, high engagement from your community. Use them for: behind-the-scenes content, polls and questions (engagement boosts), countdown stickers for launches, product tags for shopping, and quick response to trending topics. 5–10 stories per day is the sweet spot. Save best-performing stories as Highlights — they become evergreen content on your profile.

Hashtags: The New Reality

Hashtags don’t work like they used to. The old ‘use all 30 hashtags’ advice is dead — Instagram now weights them less. Use 3–8 relevant, specific hashtags. Avoid generic (#love, #photo) — they’re spam-diluted. Use niche hashtags (#ecommercemarketing beats #marketing). Location and branded hashtags still help. Keywords in your caption now matter more than hashtags for discovery.

Growth Tactics That Still Work

Collaborations: shared-audience posts with complementary accounts double your reach overnight. Comment strategy: leave thoughtful 2-sentence comments on 20+ accounts your audience follows — your profile gets visibility. DM engagement: respond to every DM in <12 hours; Instagram rewards active accounts. Consistency: post at the same times you see engagement data showing your audience is online.

Instagram as a Conversion Channel

Direct conversion on Instagram: link-in-bio tools (Linktree, Beacons), Instagram Shopping for products, DM automation for lead capture, ‘mention in comments’ CTAs that trigger autoresponders. Indirect conversion: Instagram content builds brand awareness that pays off in branded search and direct traffic weeks later. Track ‘last-touch’ and ‘assisted’ attribution — Instagram is often a first-touch channel that converts on Google months later.
