What's under a good driveway
Most of a driveway's life is decided before any asphalt shows up. A thin layer on a soft base looks the same as a good one for about a year. Then it doesn't.
Ask any paver how deep their base is and how they compact it. Our answer is on the right, and on your quote.
Driveway paving- Asphalt surface · 65 to 75 mm, compacted Hot mix, laid and rolled in one pass for most driveways
- Crushed gravel base · 150 to 200 mm Placed and compacted in lifts. The part that holds the driveway up
- Geotextile fabric · Where soil is soft Keeps clay from pumping up into the gravel
- Native subgrade · Graded to 2% fall Sloped so water runs away from the garage and house
