How we do it

Most driveways that fail early were laid too thin or on a soft base. We dig out what needs digging, add and compact crushed gravel, then lay hot asphalt and roll it before it cools.

A typical Edmonton double driveway is 600 to 800 square feet. We measure yours on site, and the written quote shows the square feet, the rate and the total. No guessing from the street.

Example prices

What's under a good driveway

The base decides how long a driveway lasts. Here's what we build, layer by layer, and what your quote will list.

  1. Asphalt surface · 65 to 75 mm, compacted Hot mix, laid and rolled in one pass for most driveways
  2. Crushed gravel base · 150 to 200 mm Placed and compacted in lifts. The part that holds the driveway up
  3. Geotextile fabric · Where soil is soft Keeps clay from pumping up into the gravel
  4. Native subgrade · Graded to 2% fall Sloped so water runs away from the garage and house
Typical driveway build-up, drawn roughly to scale. RV pads and heavy trucks get more asphalt and more base.
Loader spreading crushed gravel for a new driveway base in front of a house
Base first: crushed gravel placed and compacted before any asphalt.
Worker raking the edge of fresh asphalt between the paver and the roller
Edges raked by hand between the paver and the roller.

The job, step by step

  1. 01

    Measure and mark

We measure, photograph and mark the edges with paint, then send the quote within two business days.

  2. 02

    Locates

Gas, power and phone lines are marked before anything is dug.

  3. 03

    Dig out and grade

Old asphalt and soft material come out. The grade is set so water runs away from the garage.

  4. 04

    Base and compact

Crushed gravel goes down and gets compacted in lifts. This is the part you never see and the part that matters most.

  5. 05

    Lay and roll

Hot asphalt is placed, raked at the edges and rolled while it is still hot enough to tighten.

  6. 06

    Edge and clean up

Edges tapered, the site swept, and a care sheet left on your door.

Questions we get

More in the full FAQ.

How thick will my new driveway be?

65 to 75 mm of compacted asphalt over a compacted gravel base for a normal car driveway. If you park an RV or a work truck, we go thicker and say so on the quote.

Can you pave over my old driveway?

Only if it's sound: no soft spots, no wide cracks running through it. An overlay on a failing driveway just copies the cracks up through the new layer within a winter or two.

When can I drive on it?

Give it 3 days for cars, longer in a heat wave. For the first summer, avoid turning your steering wheel while the car is stopped, and use a board under kickstands and trailer jacks.
