The people who sign the promises

No stock-photo boardroom here. A president who reads daily logs, an operations VP who came up through the carpenters' union, an estimator who presents her own variances, and a safety director who phones every stop-work caller to say thanks.

President & Chief Executive Officer

Elena joined Meridian in 2004 as a field engineer on a cold-storage job and has worn nearly every hat the company issues since: project engineer, superintendent's shadow, project executive, VP of operations and, since 2019, president. She still walks a job site every week, and superintendents know she reads the daily logs.

Under her leadership Meridian doubled its self-perform craft headcount and turned down more work than it accepted, a discipline she considers the company's most important financial control. Her standing rule for project executives: bad news travels to the client faster than good news.

Marcus Whitfield

Vice President, Operations

Marcus runs the field: every superintendent, every self-perform crew, every crane pick. He came up through the carpenters' union, made foreman at 26, and joined Meridian as a superintendent on the Summit Ridge modernization, where his three-summer phasing plan became the template the company still uses for occupied campuses.

He owns the master schedule reviews and is the reason Meridian's look-ahead schedules are drawn by the people who will execute them. His crews' retention rate, 94% year over year, is the statistic he quotes before any project number.

Dana Okafor

Vice President, Preconstruction & Estimating

Dana leads the estimating and preconstruction group: nine estimators, a bid room that runs on checklists, and a cost database seeded by two decades of Meridian's own self-perform production rates. Owners meet her early. She presents every milestone estimate personally, variance by variance, in language a board can act on.

She trained as a civil engineer, spent six years pricing hospital work for a national GC, and joined Meridian to build a precon practice where the estimate and the schedule are written by the same team. Her group's ±2.8% average variance from milestone estimate to final cost is the number the sales team leads with, and the one she is hardest on.

Sam Kowalski

Director of Safety

Sam spent fifteen years as an ironworker and rigging foreman before a near-miss he still describes in detail turned him into a safety professional. He built Meridian's current program around a simple idea: a safety department should work to make itself unnecessary by putting the knowledge, and the authority, in the crews.

Every stop-work call in the last three years crossed his desk, and every caller got a phone call of thanks from him personally. He chairs the incident review board, runs the unannounced third-party audit program, and teaches the rigging module at Calder Technical College's trades program on Tuesday nights.

“Nobody has ever been hurt by a schedule slipping one day. Plenty have been hurt so it wouldn't.”
