Meridian tops out Helix Bioworks production facility eleven days ahead of baseline
The final structural beam — signed by 214 craft workers, apprentices and the owner's quality team — was set at the 145,000 SF biologics plant in the Foundry District.
The topping-out beam for Helix Bioworks' production facility was flown into place Thursday morning, marking structural completion of the 145,000 SF design-build project eleven days ahead of its qualification-driven baseline schedule. Following site tradition, the beam carried an evergreen, a flag, and the signatures of everyone who has worked the project — 214 names at last count.
The schedule position matters more than most: the building's completion date is set by a nine-month equipment-qualification campaign that cannot begin until mechanical completion. "Every day of float we bank now is a day of margin for the owner's first commercial batch," said Marcus Whitfield, Meridian's VP of operations. "The crews know exactly what they're protecting."
Prefabricated process-utility racks — built off-site in 40-foot modules while foundations were placed — begin setting next month. The project remains on track for mechanical completion in Q1 2027.

Meridian doubles craft apprenticeship intake with Calder Technical College
Twelve new concrete and carpentry apprentices join Meridian's self-perform crews this spring — the largest intake since the program began, and the first to include a rigging track.
Meridian Construction Group will take twelve apprentices into its self-perform crews this spring through its partnership with Calder Technical College — double last year's intake. Apprentices split their time between the college's Trades Hall (a building Meridian delivered in 2025, partly with apprentice labour) and paid rotations on active Meridian sites.
New this year is a rigging and crane-support track taught in part by Sam Kowalski, Meridian's director of safety, who has led the college's Tuesday-night rigging module since 2023. "The industry keeps asking where the next generation of craft workers will come from," said Elena Vasquez, Meridian's president. "They come from being hired, paid properly and taught by people who take the work seriously. There is no other trick."
Meridian's craft headcount now stands at 120, with apprentices representing just under one in ten — a ratio the company intends to hold as it grows.
