Breast augmentation, explained
Breast augmentation adds volume with a silicone or saline implant, or in smaller amounts with your own fat. Most people come to us after weight change, pregnancy, or because they have wanted more fullness for a long time.
At your consult, Dr. Merrow measures your chest and skin, and you try sizers in a fitted top. We talk about implant type, shape and placement in plain words, and we write the plan down so you can think it over at home.
What it can do
- Add fullness and balance the upper and lower body
- Restore volume lost after pregnancy or weight loss
- Improve some differences in size between the two sides
What it cannot do
- Lift breasts that sit low. That needs a lift, sometimes done at the same time
- Make the two sides match exactly. Every body is a little uneven
- Last a lifetime. Implants are medical devices that may need replacing
Is it right for me?
A general guide only. Dr. Merrow decides with you at your consultation, after an exam and a full health history.
Often a good fit if
- You are in good general health and at a stable weight
- You have finished breastfeeding at least six months ago
- You want the change for yourself, not to please someone else
Better to wait if
- You are pregnant, planning pregnancy soon, or still breastfeeding
- You smoke or vape and cannot stop for six weeks before and after
- A big life event lands in the next six weeks
Recovery, honestly
What the weeks after surgery look like
Typical timings for healthy patients. Everyone heals at their own pace, and we adjust your plan at each visit.
-
Days 1 to 3
Rest at home
Your chest feels tight and sore, like a very hard workout. A responsible adult stays with you the first night. Short walks around the house help.
-
Week 1
Back on your feet
Most people step down from prescription pain medicine within a few days. No lifting over 10 pounds. First check-up with our nurse.
-
Weeks 1 to 2
Desk work
Many people return to desk work. Jobs with lifting or reaching take longer. You wear a soft surgical bra day and night.
-
Weeks 4 to 6
Exercise returns
Dr. Merrow clears you for most exercise, one step at a time. Upper-body weights come last.
-
Months 3 to 6
Settling
Implants soften and settle lower. This is normal and takes time. Scars move from pink to pale over about a year.
Risks, in plain words
Every surgery has risks, including the risks of anesthesia. These are the main ones for breast augmentation. We go through each one with you, and how likely it is for you, at your consult.
- Capsular contracture: scar tissue around the implant tightens and can change the shape or feel
- Implant rupture or leak, which can happen years later
- Changes in nipple or breast feeling, usually better over months, sometimes lasting
- Uneven size or position between the two sides
- Infection, bleeding or fluid build-up after surgery
- Needing another surgery in the future. Many people with implants do
- A rare type of lymphoma linked mostly to textured implants, which we explain at your consult
How we lower your risk
- A full health review at your pre-op visit, and a check with your own doctor when needed
- A board-certified anesthesiologist for the whole surgery
- Blood clot prevention for every patient, matched to your risk
- Nurse check-ins in the first days and a direct line to our team
- Written recovery instructions you can share with whoever is helping you
What it costs

Common questions
More answers on our questions page, or call (303) 555-0148.
Saline or silicone: which is better?
Neither is better for everyone. Silicone tends to feel softer. Saline is filled through a smaller incision and a leak is easy to spot. Dr. Merrow explains both, shows you samples, and gives you his honest view for your body.
How do I choose a size?
We measure your chest width and skin stretch, then you try sizers in a fitted top. We guide you toward a range that suits your frame and lifestyle. You make the final choice.
Will I need to replace my implants?
Possibly. Implants are not lifetime devices. Some last decades and some need attention sooner. We see you each year and explain what to watch for.
