Rhinoplasty, explained
Rhinoplasty reshapes the bone and cartilage of the nose. It can smooth a bump, refine the tip, change the width, or improve how well you breathe through your nose.
We plan with photos and simple drawings, and we talk about what will look right on your face, not a trend. Small, careful changes often make the biggest difference.
What it can do
- Smooth a bump on the bridge or refine a wide or drooping tip
- Bring the nose into better balance with your face
- Improve breathing when an inside structure is blocked
What it cannot do
- Copy another person's nose
- Show the final result quickly. The tip can stay swollen for a year or more
- Promise perfectly even sides. Faces are naturally a little uneven
Is it right for me?
A general guide only. Dr. Merrow decides with you at your consultation, after an exam and a full health history.
Often a good fit if
- Your face has finished growing, usually by about 16 to 18
- You have a clear idea of what bothers you
- You can be patient through a long, slow settling time
Better to wait if
- Someone else is pushing for the change
- You play contact sports and cannot take about three months off
- You had nose surgery less than a year ago
Recovery, honestly
What the weeks after surgery look like
Typical timings for healthy patients. Everyone heals at their own pace, and we adjust your plan at each visit.
-
Days 1 to 7
Splint on
A small splint protects your nose. You feel stuffy, like a bad cold, and may bruise around the eyes.
-
Day 7
Splint off
We remove the splint at a nurse visit. Your nose looks swollen. That is expected.
-
Weeks 1 to 2
Back to work or school
Most bruising fades. Avoid blowing your nose hard and resting glasses on the bridge.
-
Weeks 3 to 6
Exercise
Light exercise returns, then more. No contact sports for about three months.
-
Months 6 to 18
The slow part
Swelling at the tip fades slowly. The final shape can take a year or longer.
Risks, in plain words
Every surgery has risks, including the risks of anesthesia. These are the main ones for rhinoplasty. We go through each one with you, and how likely it is for you, at your consult.
- Trouble breathing through the nose
- A shape that is uneven or not what you hoped, sometimes needing a small revision
- Numbness of the tip or front teeth area, usually temporary
- Nosebleeds in the first days
- A small scar under the nose when the open method is used
How we lower your risk
- A full health review at your pre-op visit, and a check with your own doctor when needed
- A board-certified anesthesiologist for the whole surgery
- Blood clot prevention for every patient, matched to your risk
- Nurse check-ins in the first days and a direct line to our team
- Written recovery instructions you can share with whoever is helping you

Common questions
More answers on our questions page, or call (303) 555-0148.
Can you fix my breathing too?
Often yes. If a structure inside the nose blocks airflow, we can repair it in the same surgery. That part may be covered by insurance when it is medically needed.
Can I see what my new nose might look like?
We use photos and drawings to talk about direction and size of change. A picture is a guide, not a promise. Healing and your own tissues shape the final result.
Will my nose look swollen for long?
Most visible swelling fades in a few weeks. The tip is the slowest and can take a year or more to fully settle.
